my yak

the crate has a 2X4 bolted to it for holding a trolling motor. (30lb thrust minn kota). it is very lightweight and can be mounted on either side. the battery sits in the crate along with my tackle, anchor, and whatever else. the crate itself is mounted on the yak with cateyes and metal turnbuckles, easily fastened down or removed. the red platform on the front is actually a platform for my second mate, my dog. she almost always goes out with me. but in an effort to give her solid ground to walk around on in what was pretty much wasted space, i mounted this board. it is removable and has a yoga mat marine glued to it for comfort and no slipage. yeah, shes got it made and loves it. outher additions include the anchor trolley, rod holders on the sides that can also hold outriggers i built. the rod holders on the milk crate (pvc and pull ties). and i got lucky and found a boat trailer in great shape very cheap on craigslist. makes life a little easier. just thought id share…

Its got character, I’ll give you that!

Pretty cool rig.
One note, if you’re using a trolling motor on public waters you’ll need to get registration numbers. Way cheaper than the ticket for not being registered.

Hey Yakfisher,

I might steal your trolling motor idea. I have a 16ft discovery canoe I can outfit like that by using c claps on rail lip to hold 2x4 to canoe. You said the trolling motor is light but do you have to counter balance kayak when you use it?

This would make my life easier when six year old decides to quit helping with paddling out on Wando.

That minnow is over slot

Inshore Fishing Season 2: Electric Chicken Boogaloo

yeah that minnow was a fighter. i talked to dnr, they said i did not have to be registered under 10hp. yeah i put a 5# counter weight on the other side, but its not mandatory. just fine without it.

cstonyakfisher,

thanks for the info on counter balance and trolling motor.

You might want to double check with dnr. You are correct that you don’t have to register/title a motor under 5hp. However, the canoe/kayak that will have the trolling motor on it needs to be titled/registered for $40.

They need picture or receipt of canoe/kayak, hull number and note stating it will have a trolling motor on it.

Whoa! Holy decked out fishing kayak! Nice trailer. Do you launch it on the ramp?

oh yeah, it literally takes about 1 minute total launch time, plus, it only sees either water or the trailer, never on the ground. if you can find a used trailer at a good price, i highly recommend it.
