Took my son and old man to the nearshore reef this morning. Put them both on some BSB and loved their laughs and smiles. Pulled anchor at noon to head back in. Coming back into the jetties and down CHS channel things seemed to blow up and get swirly. We rode things in just fine, however, I was really caught off by the breaking/white capped waves coming into the jetties. I’ve been offshore countless times, but today just seemed different. Looking for some advice on what I missed.
Mouth of the jetties can be sporty no matter the wind. Outgoing tide vs an east wind is always fun
I always plan on a confused sea at the mouth and am pleasantly surprised when it’s not

Yeah I avoid Charleston harbor as much as possible due to the entry. It can be bumpy quite often.

It’s usually a mess at the end and at the grillage. Ive had a few white knuckle rides at the tip of the jetties.

Its the washing machine. Ive been in sight of the bridge and it took over an hr to make it in because the washing machine was on full force.
Go around the south jetty, come in all the way almost to the Morris Beach and cross over there in front of Fort Sumter. Usually much smoother but you have to watch for sand bars.

Full Moon= strong tides make the entrance nasty, especially a wind against the tide scenario.

Speaking of, has anyone recently run through Dewees? Is the parasail boat still running through there?
quote:i agree, this way is a lot smoother but like he said, beware it has shallow sand bars, but one for sure is it’s mostly tidel of the open sea and the incoming or outgoing tide mixing and no fun, once u get out past the mixing bowl the sea is usually a lot more calmer, this happens all up and down the east coast, some tidal inlets worst , keep a strait mind with no fear and drive the boat and u be fine, panic and freak out ur gonna be swimming, panic kills...
