Anyone using the hot maps premium chip? The one that has the High Definition chart of Lake Murray that is supposed to be contours every 1’. Just wanted to see if it was as advertised before my friend drops $150. He has the HDS7 with the Insight Lakes, and the map is pretty good, but not as detailed as my G2 chart with my Garmin. I think his contours go every 4’-10’ and my Garmin is about every 1’-3’. Any other features on it that is worth buying it for?
Been using the hot maps premium chip for over a year…well worth the money. I’ve been fishing Murray for 30+ years and thought I knew the lake well. When I put the chip in, I found humps and structure that I didn’t know was there…your friend won’t be disappointed…I believe it also has Clarks Hill and Hartwell…and the inshore detail is great also…
He is my neighbor. Might have to do that unless he decides to just buy it. I could swing by this afternoon and grab it to see the difference between the preload and the chip and then bring it right back.
Hey Tim…if you’ve got any numbers stored on it I may want to borrow it as well;)
Well…the numbers get stored to the unit and not the chip…but I will gladly send you the numbers we fished Monday morning.
Actually, the only numbers I permanantly leave on mine are the close in reefs where we fish for sheeps in the winter. I clear mine out on the lake often. Kinda silly maybe, but I like to have the only waypoints showing being ones that are relevant at the time I am out out there. I also like to just go 'scouting" from the house and find some new spots to check before I go out.
I have thought about just leaving them all on there and naming them something relevant like having the approximate depth in the name…ie 45A, 45B, 57A etc…
I have stored lots of structure and humps as I have discovered them on the lake. BUt I am new to the area. After a year of fishing, I have become familiar with all of my saved spots and don’t need saved waypoints. I will probably clear mine out at the end of the season as well. It clutters up a small 4" screen pretty quickly.
I use a naming system for the different waypoints I have saved ie: BP001 is brush pile #1 and any relevant info is written in a notebook. My memory isn’t what it used to be so I have to keep notes now.
I think my premium has 3’ contours, which is fine for me. You’re to young to remember these and maybe I am just easy to please, since this is what I used when I first started striper fishing on Lake Murray.
And that was back when I didn’t have a vehicle to pull the boat either and had to pull it myself, uphill both ways through the snow to get to the boat ramp at the dam.
Can’t believe I found that pic on Ebay. Looks like guys still use them ice fishing.
Tim, what year is your chip? Navionics added HD detail of Lake Murray in 2007. I can not be sure, but I was told that the Hot Maps Premium has Lake Murray in HD with 1’ contours. If it is only 3’ I think he might as well stick with the Lake Insight built-in.
We used one of those flashers when I was a kid to locate brush piles. The guides on Moultrie used them for night fishing and would tell us what depth to drop our lines. I am so glad I grew up during the digital revolution.
If I remember corectly, I had bought my original chip before Murray ws HD and got a credit for my old chip toward the purchase of trhe HD. I will fire it up tonight and check the contours. You really think it matters a whole lot between 1’ and 3’ contours?
Boatpoor, actually saw an old paper graph on there as well. Even if someone wanted to use it I can’t imagine where u could even find paper for it.
No it doesn’t matter, I am just trying to find out the difference between each chip. Since there are people on the forum that have used the platinum and the premium just curious as to the difference. I am new to Navionics.
My Garmin has coastal G2 built in, and when I bought the G2 Vision chip for $250 it didn’t add anymore detail. Just some photographs and a few satelite images of the coast. I took it back. Downloaded the Lake Murray chip for $10 and got 3’ contours and landmark waypoints with marina imformation.
Just wanted to make sure he didn’t go down the same road, as the built in Insight map on the HDS is decent, but wanted to see how much better it could get. I was convinced that the Premium chip gave you the most detail available for lake Murray for just $150, until 32Racer posted.
On the web, the verdict seems to be that the contours are the same from Premium to Platinum. 1’ on Murray, and that the Platinum adds 3D views, satelite imagery, etc. Just like on my Garmin when going to the overpriced Vision chip. Looks like you can get the same HD contour map on the premium and save $50.
And yes, 3’ contours are plenty. It shows me stuff on the lake that the paper maps do not.
Holy crap, I just looked at the insight data on the HDS again, and it isn’t even every 10’. It’s like every 18’-20’. From the main channel to the ramp at the dam it only shows like 3 contour lines.
I have the premium and it paints a nice picture. My old garmin was 10’, it was a huge difference. Especially when you are fishing in the backs of creeks and up in the rivers. Hard to believe just 5 years ago I was using a paper map
I think the preloaded insight is just fine. Yes the contours are a little far apart, but once u fish murry enough u pretty much know where a majority of the main humps are. And if the contours get close in the insight then u know for sure its a major hump. All the contours on the prem/plat create too much spaghetti on the screen for me…But all this is coming from someone who went from using a 50$ eagle to a hds7, so i am COMPLETELY happy with what i a using. I honestly dont think having the better chip will help that much. Not to mention i really dont think they are all that accurate.
Tom didnt u say that volcano in jakes isnt right on yours? Mine doesnt even show it but i know where it is
