Illegal monster sea bass and spiny dogfish mostly.
Are the sheeps there?

Sheeps are there, don’t forget the circle hooks.
Does anyone eat the spiny dogfish? What type bait? I have never caught one of them.

spiny dogfish is closed now as well- commercial fishery hit the limit, so all take is prohibited until… i can’t remember. i think it’s may.
they are only nearshore here in the winter months, basically filling the niche of the sharpnoses that go deeper when it’s cold. they’ll eat any chunk of meat you drop if kept close to the bottom- they’re almost everywhere, over sand and structure.
and yes, they’re delicious. flesh is bright white straight out of the water- almost freaky white. unlike other small sharks such as bonnetheads and sharpnose, they have none of the “shark smell” of urea, but when they’re legal for taking i still bleed them (whole- can’t cut off head or fins at sea) before icing. i believe to keep them in federal waters, an HMS permit is required.
they make excellent shark tacos when chunked, buttermilk soaked, cornbread battered, and deep fried.
Thanks for the info. Looks like I’ll have to wait till next winter to catch one.
no need for circle hooks for sheepshead anymore. They were removed from the snapper grouper complex by the feds on January 1st. The state will take over managment of the species and circle hooks are not required. Good luck getting your bait past the sea bass right now though. Thanks to the infinite wisdome of NOAA they are so over populated on the wrecks right now you can hardly get a bait to the bottom with out one on it.
Time to break out the decoys boys.

Nauti H, Did the state ever pass their regulations? I know they are looking at lowering the bag limit and getting rid of the circle hook requirement. I was told that until they do the fed regulations are still in place. Might want to check with the DNR before scrapping the circle hooks. I just looked at the SC DNR site and there are no regulation changes posted to the 2011 - 2012 regulations.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
correct, Opps. state has not yet taken over management and circle hooks are required.
The way I understand it is that SAFMC passed a federal law stating that circle hooks had to be used when fishing for any fish in the snapper-grouper complex. The state of SC then enforced this federal regulation. Now that sheephead has been removed from the s-g complex by the SAFMC, it would appear to me that there is no longer a law requiring circle hooks to be used for sheephead, unless for some reason SC passed legislation that mirrored the federal law and it has to be undone at the state level now. It just wouldn’t make any sense otherwise as our state would be enforcing a law that no longer exists.

squid, you may be right. have gotten 2 different answers from 2 different NMFSers. one said commercial regs apply to all fishing, other said it’s closed only to commercial permit holders, they’re state-managed, and they’re not an HMS species.
i admit confusion on the dogfish, but advise and practice caution.
has anyone actually gotten a ticket for the circle hook thing? couldn’t you just say you were fishing for reds…
