Nearshore & C-60 Sat 6-20

Left Remley;s this morning a little before 7. Not a bar ride out to the nearshore. We dropped anchor over structure and proceeded to bail undersized BSB’s and small sharks. Put 1 legal BSB in the fish box.
Rode out to the C-60 to see if the were better fish to be found. Dropped squid and cut mullet down on the bottom and started pulling up ringtails and more undersized BSB.
Highlight of the morning was hooking up on a ringtail only to have a COBIA EAT IT[:0][:0][:0] about 10 feet under the boat. He took off, turned it once, got it alongside the boat and came unbuttoned. Brought 1/2 a ringtail in the boat.

10 minutes later Steve hooks up to a ringtail AND IT GETS EATEN… BIG OLD COBE… It takes off on the first run and comes unbuttoned :face_with_head_bandage:. Steve jigs the rod twice, then throws it in freespool. Line starts to disappear off the reel… wait… wait… wait. Set the hook and it’s off to the races… YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAA
1 blistering run,
bring it close, it sees the boat, ZZZZZZZZZZZZ 2nd blistering run, bring it close, it sees the boat, ZZZZZZZZZZZ 3rd blistering run.
Steve brings it close for the 3rd time and POP GOES THE FLUORO. :face_with_head_bandage::face_with_head_bandage:

A few minutes later 3 guys pull up beside us , drop anchor and are tight to another cobe inside of 20 minutes… Long fight and POP

Fished a couple more hours, saw a couple more cobes cruising, a few cudas passed by, 1 big ole turtle. Put more undersize BSB’s, ringtails, and 3 undersized gags in the boat.

On the way in we ran thru a good sized school of flyers inside the 60.

Great day on the water with an easy going guy…

Thanks for the ride Steve. We’ll hit it again soon and I owe you a yak trip.

'Scuse my ignorance, but what is a ringtail?

Ringtail Porgy
Fish around any of the nearshore reefs and you will catch plenty. When you see one you will know why they call it a “Ringtail”.

The proper name for a ring-tail is actually spot-tail porgy. It’s just the spot goes around it’s tail so most people call them ring-tails.

Take a kid fishing!

Good work on the almost cobia. Were you fishing light spinning tackle or medium to heavy bottom rigs?

Both. The cobes hit on the medium weight bottom rigs

Cobia are thick on the nearshore reefs right now. Take heavier tackle to subdue these creatures due to the amount of structure.

gotta get em’ with the kee-kee run…

Sounds like a good time. Did you see the spadefish out there? We hit 4ki friday and it was SLOW only saw one cobia under a turtle and the spades were not cooperating.

Tried bringing spades up at the 60 Thursday, no luck. I guess it was the early am rain

no spades on the 60 yesterday. That’s two weekends in a row with no luck.

Fishing off the jetties i saw plenty of menhaden, and evidently a school of kings or spanish had torn them up. hooked up a nice 15lb red while trolling for kings. they’re out there on the reefs too, with big AJ’s and cobia of course.

“Man: Your eyes are so beautiful, your skin is so soft…your absolutley gorgeous.” “Girlfriend: Are you talking about me or the fish!!!”

Fished the 60, capers ledge then the 73, on the 60 free lineing blue runners we caught on the way out, hooked into a 20+ lb cobia 44 inches, which we landed along with a load of ringtails and AJ’s. along with that we had plenty of BIG baracuda hanging around the boat. Nothing but sharks on the ledge, then shot to the 73 with plenty of AJ’s. While clearing the lines on a hook up, 15 ft down hooked into something, peeled the drag all the way down the 96 ft to the bottom and decided to camp out for about a half an hour while the two of us played yo-yo. Locked the full drag down on the TLD and he decided to keep taking what I reeled in. Then the sad part, tried to muscle him up, with thumb on the drag, pole snapped, line snapped, fish gone and 12 inches of rod hits me in the chest. Not a happy camper. Will be back out the Wednesday, maybe he’s still got my rig in his mouth. Thanks for the report, We’ll see…

Always remember, It could suck worse than this…

Good seeing you out there. It hurts to lose a nice one. Especially after fighting it through 3 runs.
