Nearshore fishing in Bay Boat

Been fishing almost exclusively inshore for the past 6 years in my bay boat. Im looking to expand my fishing grounds and start heading to some of the nearshore reefs. Since I fish mainly inshore I’m looking for insight on what type of weather I should look for in order to ensure a safe trip.

What wave height, interval, wind direction, wind speed would be safe for me to take my 22ft bay boat to some of the nearshore reefs off the coast? Also what websites/apps does everyone use for wind and wave information?

Thanks to anyone that’s willing to help out. Im excited to start chasing some fish off the beaches.

anytime the forecast is light and var
iable, the ocean is flat, 5 - 10 is doable most days in a bay boat … 10 - 15 can be done in a bay boat but its not so pleasant++

I USUALLY CHECK OUT CONDITIONS ON THE SWC SITE , LOTS OF OCEAN/FISHING INFO TO USE THERE ;; MORE FISHING RESULTS POSTED HERE ON CF IMHO…

When you see “Old Glory” waving in the breeze, know that it is the dying breaths of our fallen hero’s that makes it wave.

Gail Wins - What is the SWC site? Not familiar with that I don’t believe.

Watch what others are doing. We will take our Maverick flats boat to the Edisto 40 reef frequently

I have a 24’ bay boat. I have to cross 13 miles of open water to get to where I want to fish. Like everyone else, I prefer light and variable winds with seas under 1’. I’ll go in seas 1-2’. When seas get to 2.5’, I have to slow down and it gets bumpy. I won’t go if 3’ seas are in the forecast. I’ll fight 2’ seas to go, especially if I’ll have trailing seas on my return. Of course, the larger the interval, the better it is. The boat will handle rougher seas than I want to be in. Don’t take chances. If in doubt, don’t go.

The Charleston Near shore reef, the Charleston 60, just inside & outside the jetties Spadefish, you can troll for Kings,

Watch the weather conditions, NOAA weather reports, DNR weather reports. Some free WEB sites for waves & periodicity I pay $ 24 a year for reef cast. It use to be free but it’s the way it is . I always check to make sure I have good weather for 2-3 days before I go to the ledge. Your life depends on it.
