Nearshore reefs

I’m wanting to go try the nearshore reefs if the weather is permitting when I am down on April 21-23 if the weather permits. I will be in the bay boat in my signature. I have 4 4000 size spinning reels with 30-40 pound braid and 2 6000 size reels with 60 pound braid. I’m fuguring Carolina rigs are the most used rigs? Any other types I shoulders? Also, what baits are best out there? I’m figuring menhaden and other bait fish. Also as far as anchoring goes, any tips as far as anchoring? I have an Ulterra with a 60 inch shaft, would it just be easiest to use the spot lock on it? Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Sounds like you are all set. Squid is good out there too. Spot lock is the way to go. That’s all I use anymore. Be ready to catch 290 undersize black bass…

Thanks for the replies! Yeah I’ve seen the posts on Black Sea bass and catching all the small ones. Any particular reefs better than others this time of year? Mainly looking at capers, CHS nearshore and CHS 60. Any other suggestions?

the dropper loop rig, as Long Enuff stated, is your best bet. Unlike the carolina rig, it allows you to quickly change out hook sizes and/or weight sizes.

also, take a look at bluewater supermaps and find you some live bottom areas to play around with as well.

A carolina rig with a small hook and a fiddler for sheeps. Make sure you ice the big ones down and put the pictures on here.

Bring a sabiki rig to catch some live bait. Freeline a few live ines, you never know… Also, I haven’t been out yet this year, but spadefush hang around the reefs, esp the 60. If you see a jelly ball on way out, scoop it up. I saw some jelly balls in the river this weekend so I know they’re around.

I’m not familiar w the anchor you mentioned but I rig my danforth with the shacle at the door and use heavy zip ties to secure the chain to the shank. This way if need be, I can lift it from the bottom.

Thanks for all the help! What size hooks are good? I have from 1/0-4/0 from my normal inshore/striper fishing

Usyacker, can’t beat the I pilot! Beats the heck of all the rope, wind and tide does it automatic. Use mine almost exclusvily.

Seriously consider 2 to 4 oz. buck tails or metal jigs such as Hopkins or Williamson. You will catch bigger fish. You will also lose some.

Will definitely get plenty to try! I like catching fish on artificials. Coming from a bass fishing background it's what I'm used to

Make sure you’re using circle hooks on the drooper loop rig.

The circle hooks are required by law when bottom fishing for anything in the snapper/grouper complex with natural baits.

Got some more Circle hooks on the way so that’s taken care of. Thanks for the help everyone! One more question, what weather sites do y’all use to see conditions out there? I’ve found several I check but was wondering if some were better than others or what
