So I need a new cast net to throw from the yak as my 8 footer is obviously way to big to throw, I was thinking something along the lines of 4 feet however I have two questions, one is mesh size (I won’t be going shrimping with this so I was thinking a pretty small mesh, opinions?), and the other is the difference between a nylon and monofilent net, which would be best for my purposes, can someone fill me in? It would be greatly appreciated.
I have a Betts 6’ Tyzac 3/8" nylon that I really like. It is inexpensive but throws and holds up like a much more expensive net. I use mine for bait and like the fact that very little gets hung up in it. I also have the same net in a 4’ for throwing from my kayak.

For that purpose, I would go with the 4-6ft 3/8 mesh from wallyworld. They are cheap, and they are cheap, and they are cheap.
Most importantly, they are cheap enough to almost be disposable and they are cheap.
The SuperSpreader with the Kuff seems to be slightly better quality than the other no name ones at wallyworld.
I hate promoting WW, but if you can show me where I can buy a 6ft castnet for $40 within 10 miles of my house 24/7 I’ll shop there.
4 foot is a little small to my taste. I throw a 6’ Betts w/ 3/8 mesh, also have a 6’ w/ 1/4 mesh that is great in the spring when the shrimp are small and get hung in the bigger net.
THis should help you throw the net from the yak

Remember…it’s better to throw a small net good than a bigger net bad…so whichever one you can throw the best out of your Yak is what I’d get. I have a 4’ and a 5’ (1/4") net that I like because especially in the spring when the small finger mullet are out there, they don’t get gilled in the net. Problem is that 1/4" Betts are usually around 75$ and have to be ordered…at least the ones I have were. As the other poster said…a cheap Wallyworld one is good to have in an area that might rip your net. I have a 6’ Super Pro for Shrimping, but have a bad shoulder, so I can’t shake it out too good. Getting old is hell.

I have a 1/4" net but it catches everything that lives in the water and is heavy, I use the 3/8 " net 95% of the time! I threw it on a school of small shad one time and had to have help pulling it in!!! Took 2 days to pick out all the minis.
4’ will be too small, get a 6’ and Betts makes a good net for the money. I throw a 6 in the creeks and I like the Betts because they make a decent net and they don’t cost much. I catch oysters all the time and run through a net every season.
