Need advice from Cracker Larry

What is the best kind of fishing rod to use in saltwater? No offense but I only want answers from the best fishermen around here.

Send him a PM then new guy.

I’m flattered, but I don’t consider myself the best fisherman on here[:I]

Quantum Cabo reels are what I use and I build my own inshore rods on St. Croix blanks. Haven’t bought an inshore rod in years. You’ll get a lot of other input.

Thanks for your response. I will look into those products. I never considered building a rod. Quick question: If you are already going through the trouble of building the rod, why not just build the reel as well?

No salt, no fun.

At least it’s from an alias with a good sense of humor.
That’s pretty funny.

I’m not that good!! Getting fair on the rods though. They get me through winter nights.

I answered your question too hastily. Let me try to do better. First off, what are you intending to fish for, and will you be fishing from a boat or from shore? What is your preferred fishing method, fly rod? I’m not the man to ask. I suck. Bait casting reels? I suck there too. I use an open face spinning reel inshore. My regular fishing partner prefers a bait casting reel and he can cast a little jig 100 yards with it. I can’t.

What is your target fish? For most reds and trout and flounder a 12lb. outfit is what I use. If fishing for bull reds or sheephead, then 20lb. Cobia or sharks 30lb. I also have an 8lb. setup when the fish are picky, or small. I usually carry at least 2 and often 4, depending on room in the boat. Something for everything. Hope this helps.

Tell us more about what you want to do. And realize that it’s not the tackle that catches the fish, it’s the man who knows when, where and how who catches the fish. If you know that, you can catch fish on a handline wrapped around a coffee can, which they still do in many parts of the world

Well said CL its not so much the equipment as the technique!
the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish!

I just want to catch fish and live the salt life. I am good at casting but sometimes the line gets all tangled and it takes forever to get loose. I mostly catch whiting in the surf with premade rigs from a big box store though. I was thinking of a better design for a reel that would prevent this but I’m having trouble choosing a rod. I definitely want to try to catch bigger fish maybe black tips or reds or even rays. I like to sketch sea life too so I was wondering what’s the max length of time these fish can stay out of water safely.

No salt, no fun.

The best fishing rod to use in salt water is one that catches fish. I use a old penn with the eyes held on with dental floss. Never failed me.

Thanks, is that what the guy at the hardware store told you when you asked for specific dimensions of pipe? Yeah the one that lets water through it.

Good thing some of you aren’t in charge of anything.

No salt, no fun.

Nice looking wrap design on those rods Larry ! Question though ; what kind of drag system and rewind do they use on those coffee can reels?:smiley::imp::wink:Keep us posted on the BACK , good luck.

Lol @ live the salt life. If your line is getting tangled, it probably has precious little to do with the quality of rod/reel/line/bait. One of them is mismatched, i.e. too big or too small. You can catch a whiting with anything including a snoopy rod/reel combo. I’m sure you can figure it out, it’s not brain surgery.

Is the Snoopy brand rod and reel combo a good rod? Let me rephrase; are many of you using this setup?

No salt, no fun.

Zebco 33 would probably suit you best if you backlash a lot. Get the new saltwater edition and you’ll be living the salt life in no time.

I had to stop using the Snoopy set-ups, switched to Disneys “Princess” line when targeting Sharks an Bull Reds…flawless!

Seriously though, use what works for YOU, not what everyone else is using. I’m pretty tuff on rods, between packing, traveling and hiking they get knocked around alot. My favorite all around saltwater rods, 7’-9’, cost about $22. And I’m thinking as millacd said, don’t think your problems are with the “kind”/“brand” of rod, but more a line, lure, weight or technique issue.

What setups are you having trouble with? That would help us help you more, I figure.

We have a pretty sweet Sponge Bob setup we might consider selling.

dparker; isn’t that the Frozen set up?? I figured runbaby would have
posted Gracies set up by now.[:0] Where you at Pete???:smiley::smiley:
This bunch is terrible and all in fun.

Since I am a better and more experienced fisherman, gardener, boat builder, hunter, drinker, ladies man, and martial arts expert I can tell you with confidence that all you need is a made in China ultra light ugly stick for any fish caught in saltwater, as for the reel I build my own with my 3 D printer.

Cracker, all crap aside, those are some beautiful rods you posted.

That’s something I want really to learn some more about. But I can’t see me building a better reel than my Cabos. I’ve got 5 of them. Rods I can build, but even there somebody else builds the blanks and all the components. I just put them together and do the wraps.

I’ve got a couple of old Ugly Sticks that still catch fish. Nothing wrong with those. Fish don’t care how pretty the rod or the boat is, only the bait and the presentation matters.

Thanks Fred. I don’t watch TV so I’ve got to do something on winter nights. I’ve shown my rods to some fish and they weren’t impressed at all.

Man, you’ve got to watch just a little bit from time to time. Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, … Just watched a couple of old Clint Eastwood Westerns…

Don’t see many Cane poles on the banks and bridges much nowadays, but they have caught many a meal.
