Need advice on separating rod sections

I’ve got a 4 piece St. Croix 6wt Reign that I can’t get the top two sections apart. It’s not a huge deal right now, but I may want to take it on a trip to Wyoming later this summer, and will need to break it down to travel. I’ve tried heating the joint with hot water, to no avail, and thought about heating it with a lighter, but am afraid of ruining the varnish and threads. Any advice on other methods would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Freeze it or ice the joints down. Will come right out then. Put some nose grease on the male end before you put them back together.

as the legendary OC Polk showed me…put the rod behind your knees and seperate from there. works every time

My Reign rods came with a nice little tub of bees wax attached ot the tube… I slap some of that on and it’s like buttah

One trick we use to get windsurfing masts apart is to get two people on each end to help twist and pull. For a 6 wt. it might only take one person on each end and even that might take some finesse.

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve already tried the behind the knees deal scotty…no dice. I’ll try freezing it next. If all else fails, I’ll beat it until it breaks, then send it in for a warranty replacement:wink:
