Need an aluminum welder

I been reading horror stories about the bigger Suzuki engines butterfly valves coming loose. So since I was off today I decided to check mine. It was a fairly simple job. Mine were perfectly fine and then screws holding the butterfly valves on were staked extremely well. They are staked all the way across the back side of the screws, not just dented with a punch, more like a cold chisel.

Problem is with the throttle body, or intake cover. I can’t find the correct terminology for it. It is cracked, I’m thinking it won’t hurt anything, because the fuel doesn’t flow through it, just air I’m assuming. I’d like to get it repaired while I have it off though. Here’s a couple pictures.

What caused the crack?

No idea, looks like it may have been dropped before. Hard to say. It’s dented, so either someway somehow it was hit, or dropped. I just got it a couple months ago, and I’m the type that if I read something, I have to be sure I’m gonna be ok. My biggest fear was sucking a butterfly valve into a piston while off shore. Anyway, if I hadn’t checked them, I’d have never seen the crack in the throttle body cover. It’ll be back in the water in no time this way.

Butterfly pieces are larger than intake ports - they’ll only fall to the bottom or wedge in the intake. The hardware will make it thru though. I had plug gaps (2) closed down, lost of rpm indicated. After initial occurrence I replaced entire manifold (can’t buy individual parts), lock-tighted threads and punched the end of the screws. Other motor had several not so tight so I just repaired that gang.
Camera scope lookie-lookie inside: crowns had been dimpled but cylinders and heads looked ok, compression & leak-down all satisfactory.

While ya have the area opened up, send out the injectors for cleaning, screens and flow test.

Have you checked to be sure the ECM recall has been preformed on this motor? Suzuki had a stop sale/use on these several years ago due to a bad ECM causing a backfire in the collector and cracking or even worse, blowing intake and engine lid off the motor. We had one backfire in our shop during a scheduled maintenance and did quite a bit of damage.

Call a local Suzuki dealer and give them the serial # and they will be able to tell you if the repair has been completed. If it has, your good to go. If not, get it done asap.

By the way, no worries on the “cracks”. Those are crankcase casting imperfections. Most aluminum casting covers, cases, etc… are riddled with them. You can google it to see for yourself. Motorcycles, jet skis, boats, cars, you name it. They all have it.

Thanks for the info! I’ll be looking to see who is a Suzuki dealer so I can give them a shout. She runs great! I love the engine, quiet and efficient with plenty of power.
