You are not the first to comment on his work. Seems like everyone is very pleased with him. Sounds like a great guy to do business with.

I need to give him a call on my jon boat project I guess.

How about trailer welding?

What do you need welded? Mild steel, galvanized, alulminum?? More than likely I can weld it. Although I’m not a big fan of welding galvanized, but nothing a grinder can’t take care of.
Feel free to give me a call.

Thanks, Bob

“Seems like everyone is very pleased with him. Sounds like a great guy to do business with.”

Have heard the same thing as well! Nice to see these days someone who goes the extra mile.

On the galv. welding bit Bob, have you ever heard of people drinking a large glass of milk before they have to weld galv. to offset the toxicness of the galv. fumes?

Have had to weld on galv. before and like you said, it’s not fun. heard this long time ago and allways wondered if it was a old wives tale or not. Of course, best best is to grind it all off first like you mentioned.

I guess you could say I’m “old school”. A good job at a fair price is what I’m all about. I’m not out to gouge anyone, just trying to make a living. I try to help anyone as best as I can.(You can thank my Mom and Dad, may they rest in peace</font id=“red”>, for that)

As far as the glass of milk to offset galv. fumes. I’ve heard it before but have never tried it. Galvanized fumes are too scary to even think about breathing in:dizzy_face::dizzy_face:. I even have a tendency to hold my breath while I’m welding it.(even after grinding)

Bob, I am sure I will not say anything that Happy Bob does not know but:

Without seeing it, it sounds like whoever originally welded your top had to put pressure on it when they welded. That just magnifies the stress because it is essentially under stress at rest. Just something to think about

Bob,
Where are you located?

Back in the day when I was a millwright for WestVaco, we welded a good bit. I always heard about the milk deal. I never did it, but I knew a bunch of fellow welders that swore by it…

Happy Bob is a good fellow! Just don’t try to haggle with him on his t-top prices though…[:0]:wink:

Bullfrog,

Without mentioning any names or putting blame, I personally believe the culprit was just poor design.(that is just my opinion) The hardtop weighs at least 500 lbs. by itself, then add radar, lights, wiring, outriggers, etc. and there’s probably 600 lbs. or more in the top alone.

Besides poor design, insufficiant sized pipe, improper (or non-existent) bracing and trussing led to the fracturing problems.

I’ve worked (and argued) with the engineers of many major boat manufacturers(and I hope I don’t piss anyone off), but what may work and look good on paper or on the computer modeling, may very well not work in the real world. I have proved it on more that one occasion.

In my 23 years in this field, I’m proud to say, I have never had anything that I designed and built fail due to poor workmanship or design.

Okay, I’m getting off my soap box now. Yall have a good week end.

And thanks to every member of the armed forces for helping protect our freedom!!!

Happy Bob is correct.

I’ve had the pleasure of working for 7 process piping firms in South Carolina throughout my professional career…have seen many things on paper that were “pipe dreams”.

On many occasions have heard phrases to this effect…“Well, I’m no engineer, I’m just a dumb contractor”. Have said it myself on occasion.

I’ll take the dumb contractor anyday.

Happy Bob, I’ve only seen photos of your work.

It is beautiful.

And your client recommendations regarding workmanship speak for themselves.

Kudos to you and your entrepreneurial spirit.

edisto-fisher,
I don’t have anything lined up for the Charleston area at the present time. I do have a maybe, but nothing set in stone. I’ll defintly contact you if something comes up. Thanks.

IM4USC,
Thank you for the compliment. I’m just a dumb old welder. I’ve told engineers
“I’ve been doing this stuff for 20 years and I still don’t know what I’m talking about!”(insert sarcastic look here)

I have also been known to take off my welding hood and offer it to them to “show me how to do it” It’s amazing how fast people can back up!

Thanks again everyone. Bob
