Need help finding this type of boat

Alright, I was down on Sullivan’s Island yesterday and I saw this yellow center console just down the road from Poe’s Tavern in a side yard on the side of the road opposite from Poe’s. It is a small yellow center console with green bottom paint and a 90 hp Yamaha…maybe about 17 to 18 feet in length.

The brand I read on the side said “Coastal Carolina” with a Palmetto tree at the L in Coastal. I am trying to find this type of boat online but have been unable to. Does anyone know who builds this boat or if you can find them anymore? It looked like great boat to cruise around in.

Any info on this type of boat would be appreciated.

if it Looked like a panga style hull with a wood rail cap, i think i know exactly what you are talking about… a guy pulled up to us at the beach on kiawah a few years ago in one. this one was seafoam colored though.

he said he was the builder, and i guess he is a small operation. we were talking to him because it was a stunning boat.

i could not find any info about them at the time, but i think “Coastal Carolina” was the name on the boat.

yep, that is exactly what it looked like. the one right now on the trailer at sullivan’s had the wooden rail cap and was yellow with a green hull. It was awesome. If anyone knows anymore about it, please let me know. I might knock on the guy’s front door and ask him some questions about it.

One of the Harwell brothers (a good ole James Island family) was building a boat like that not long ago. They showed it to me one day. What you’re describing sounds exactly like the boat he was building. Try calling Don Alderman over at Wachovia Securities in downtown Chas (I think he still works there), and ask him about it. I think he’s good buddies with Harwell and may have been in on that operation.

just tried to find out more info… there is zero info from google. from what i remember, it did not sound like he was a full time builder, but did it from time to time for friends and friend’s of friends. (at a premium it sounded like)

i’d like to know more info as well… i still remember how good that boat looked running.

“gotchacovered” thank you for the information,i will follow up… “floater” i tried google also and could not find a single thing about it. I really liked that boat and would be interested in one possibly.

Bullboxer:

I see that boat every time I drive out to the fort. It really is beautiful. Never seems to move though. I’d ask around the neighborhood right there and see if you can locate and talk to the owner personally.

No problem. Glad to help.

BTW, I just talked to Bill Harwell, and that is his boat (the one he builds) and he is still building that boat. He told me to give you his number, so check your PM’s in a few minutes.

Bill told me it was OK to post his cell phone number on here, so here it is if anyone is interested in checking out or buying one of those boats that Bullboxer and Floater described.

Bill Harwell is a local guy who grew up on James Island and builds the boat, described above, at a facility that he owns in Costa Rica and imports them here.

His phone number is 345-0273.

Bill’s a real nice guy. Give him a call if you are interested.

Thank you so much. I will give him a ring tomorrow probably. I really like his boats. Is there anywhere online to view a gallery on them or to get specs on them?

You’re welcome. No problem at all, sir.

I don’t know of any webstie where you can view the specs. Bill can tell you everything you want to know, though.

Godspeed to you.

Any chance of some pics?

…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!

Uncanny! I saw a similar boat at Lake Murray today. Beautiful boat. I was told it was made in Costa Rica. The manufacturer was Bogey. A search pulled Bogey Boats, Inc. in Boca Raton with no other information.
The Costa Rica reference makes me wonder does your friend’s builder sell them for branding other companies?

I test drove an 18 or 19 ft version of their boat a couple of years ago and was very impressed with the performace and handling. In the end, I was turned off by the wood and paint used in the construction process. I think the boat I looked at (it may have been a year or 2 old at the time) was built old-school with wood stringers and transom, but they may have updated their construction process since then.

They are good looking boats and handle well.

An old friend ‘Lee’ called and informed me of this forum. I must admit I am very happy to read the posts about the pangas. Costa Carolina custom pangas were first started in 1997 as a hobby/passion and maybe with hard work, high quality and results we will one day turn into a new, small custom boat building operation. The pangas are 75% built in Costa Rica and then imported into Charleston where we finish the remaining details. The pangas are 100% over built hand laid hulls, below deck full length fiberglass stringers and ribs, foam filled, nida core decking and West system epoxy interiors. The previous pangas had an above waterline solid 1 piece, 2 inch thick cedar transom carefully and completely sealed and thankfully 12 years later not a single problem at all. We are now experimenting with ‘Coosa board’ composite transoms. The paint is repairable, Awl craft 2000. One of the pangas was sold and is used on Lake Murray, a yellow hull, wooden gunwale, 20 cc. So far we have built 12 pangas in all, 8 are in Charleston, a new 23 ft was imported this week into Charleston. A web site and photo’s are coming soon. Thanks to all for the positive posts!, Bill

The hull I saw at Hydrotech Marine near Lake Murray was a yellow hull and a mid size etec outboard. Would your hull say “Bogey” where the manufacturer label usually sits on each side? That is a great looking boat. It looks heavy, does this account for the good ride?

Allular, it sounds like the same 20ft cc, yellow hull that we sold. it had an E-Tec 90, oyster white interior, leaning post, full length wooden gunwales. The owner took off the ‘Costa Carolina’ labels on the aft port and starboard sides. I don’t know maybe he named the panga ‘Bogey’. I’m guessing that it is the same panga that we made, I do know that one is on the lake up there. The panga’s are pretty heavy, that’s how we like to make them, over built specs, no chatter, stable ride. We are working on reverse v’s, chines, lifting strakes to dry the boats out a bit more.
