…my daughter was just accepted to Charleston Law School. Hoping there’s some CF members that might have some connections or rentals. Please send me a PM if you know of a safe place to rent…and while I am at it…locations that she should stay away. Thanks in advance!
Is she going to have a car or do you want her to be within walking distance? We have some stuff, but it’s currently rented. Rent is on the high side right now. Are you looking for an apartment or a house with a yard?
Lots of CofC students live a mile or two away and bike in.
Downtown is expensive, James Island is a little less, and West Ashley is the most affordable. There are some nice places in North Charleston now, but you have to be careful. Lots of brand new nice places next to heavy drug/crime areas. We own property all around, Ill be glad to answer questions before you decide on something.
Thank you @23sailfish! She does have a car and rents an apartment. Also currently employed with York Prep Academy (3yrs) as a Early Childhood Special Ed teacher. Either apartment or house is fine. She will be a fulltime student with no income so we have to be smart with the expenses.
Thank you for offering up your help! The wife and I will checkout West Ashley this weekend.
Are you looking for a one bed, two bed? Is she going to have a roommate or is she on her own?
Not sure about the answers to those questions yet. Thanks for checking though!
@23sailfish we are zeroing in on things with our plans for helping our daughter navigate law school. We are visiting Charleston Law this Thursday as well as Meeting Street Lofts and Abberly(West Ashley) apartments. Then Atlantic at Grand Oaks on Friday. Any information you can share on these areas would be great. Thanks in advance for your help!
If I was in college, I’d love the Meeting Street Lofts. I imagine that’s a little more pricey, but it is very close to school. In my opinion its not walking distance for a female, but certainly a bike if you wanted to. Although I see it all the time, I wouldn’t want my daughter walking that far there, but that’s just me. I wouldn’t have a problem sending a boy on foot there. I’m probably over thinking that, but if I were you, I’d walk that route myself and make sure that I was ok with that commute on foot. That area like most in downtown is like a lot of cities, you can be in sketchy areas in five minutes or high end shopping in five minutes. Charleston is a relatively safe place, but you still need to have a good head on your shoulders and be aware of your surroundings.
The interstate is on top of you there. I would request a room closer to the south to be away from the traffic noise as much as possible. Traffic on I26 doesn’t really cease ever. I imagine the builders took that into account during construction, but I wouldn’t want to live on that side nearest the interstate.
It would be an easy place to walk the bridge from it looks like. There’s a large safe walking path on the Ravenel bridge and its probably the best view of the harbor in all of Charleston. On a clear day, you can see through the jetties and offshore. There are several hundred people walking that bridge daily, plus there’s the emergency phones on the bridge too in case anything came up.
Abberly looks really nice, but its right by the mall. On average, you are talking about twenty ish minutes to get to Charleston Law (straight down hwy17). At peak traffic times, probably 45 minutes +. So there’s that to consider. That mall isn’t what it used to be either. There’s not much going on in there other than a Target. Its got a food court and your typical shopping places, but its actually kinda sad walking through there. You can walk to Costco, but that probably doesn’t appeal to a college aged girl like it does to us old married folks!
The Atlantic again looks nice, but the commute is going to be a little longer. Its probably 30 minutes to Charleston Law on average and can push over 45 minutes during peak traffic times. Glenn McConnel can be a nightmare at times depending on what’s going on. The good news at this place is there’s lots of great things right around here. Walmart is across the street, you’re only ten minutes to Target and the Mall, about ten minutes to 526. Lots of good little places to eat and its a pretty safe area.
