Need help w/ 2 stroke evinrude 25-1990

I have an evinrude that I’m trying to get running. It sat for years.
I’ve replaced the cdi, coils and rebuilt the carb. Among other things I’m forgetting.
Problem is, the motor was kinda thrown together from several motors and that was years ago. I no longer have the other motors.

I can get it to start, but not idle or stay running.

Comp is 120-125 psi in each cylinder.
Solid spark.

I don’t have a clue how to time the motor or sync the fuel and spark, etc.

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of info online on these. All I can find are dead ends.

Any help is appreciated.

I cannot help you much on this since the problem seems to be beyond my understanding. However, if you don’t find an acceptable answer here, try marineengine.com and iboat.com.

They have forum specifically for Evinrudes.

Timing is done with the stator and flywheel. Not much can go wrong there. If the coils on the stator are good and the flywheel isn’t broken, then you’re probably fine. There is a timing advance thats hooked to the throttle linkage, but it don’t do much other than adjust your idle and timing advance… You may have a reed problem, but I doubt it if you’re getting 125psi on both cylinders. My guess is you have fuel delivery issues.

Thanks,

The fuel pump wasn’t replaced with a new one, but with a good one. I pulled it apart and inspected it. It came from the 40 evinrude that came on the boat. It was running til it threw a rod. physically the same pump.

I know I’m getting fuel, but it might be too much. I’m replacing the fuel lines tomorrow just as a precaution and I pulled the carb again to double check everything. The float needle may not have seated properly.

it’s a brand new gas tank with non eth. gas. Mixed 50:1.

The crank key looks good. I couldn’t pull off the flywheel. I broke 2 sets of bolts trying to pull it. But it has good spark. I assumed the stator is good. I could be wrong.

The fact that every part of the linkage that could be adjusted for timing and fuel delivery makes me lean to that. The carb Idle adjustment is set at 1-1/2 to 1-1/4 turns out. That’s what I found online as a good starting point.

I like 4 strokes and fuel injection.

I do not think i would ever run around with a motor like that.I would start looking for a motor you could afford that is not glued together. You could have a break down and get into trouble.I think with a rag tag motor you just up your problems on the water.be smart and be safe what ever you decide to do.

sounds like a carb issue, but could also be timing

I fixed my OMC/Evinrude(s) buy selling them for parts and buying Suzuki’s!

You just have to watch your tides/current and run against them so when or if you break down you can drift back to the landing.

Thanks guys

Stono,
When I say pieced together, I mean It started as a pull start. I added a starter and was going to add a rectifier. It was also a tiller, but I made it remote.

Years ago I bought a truckload of engines, 15-20 that had been robbed of parts. I pieced together 5-6 running outboards a sold/used them. This is what I had left.

The boat is one I’m giving to my brother. I can’t put too much into it. I’m just trying to help him get on the water.

I pulled everything back apart today. Everything looked good but I’m still getting the same results.
I’ll post on some other forums to see what I can get.
