Need help w/ Motor Diagnosis

This stems off another thread I started about cranking amps and battery replacement. Battery was running down and wasn’t sure why.

I installed the battery after having it load testing and fully charged. Something in the motor is running. The motor is not switched on, key is not even in the ignition switch. Started humming once I hooked up the battery. I did not get a chance to pull the cover off to take a look/listen due to rain coming. Disconnected the battery cables and covered the boat back up.

Can anyone help me diagnose this problem or point me in the right direction? Motor is an '06 115 Yamaha Four Stroke.

If its not raining tomorrow evening, I am going to try to get a video with the noise.

Thanks Adam

did it make the noise for a short period then stop?
if so it was probably the IAC valve cycling since you powered up the computer again.
computer powers up even witht eh key off

kind of sounds like you replaced your battery originally because it was getting drained. As to the humming… maybe a bilge pump??? Lot’s of things could be wired to constant power with the key switch off depending on your set up. Start unpluging stuff till the humming quits.

Chris, I didn’t have long to listen to see if it would stop before I unhooked the cables. I will definitely hook them up and give it a few minutes to see. That makes me feel better for now. Do you know how long it will take for the IAC Valve to cycle?

Fred, The only wires I hooked back up were the battery cables to the motor. The bilge and everything else are run on separate wires and I did not hook them up.

I will say this. My original thought was the bilge pump was the battery problem to start with. That’s why I didn’t hook it up with the battery cable.

Thanks guys.

I was having problems with mt trailer wires one time. I had truck switched on but not crunk so teh lights would work for 15-30 minutes or so & in tha time my battery was drained to teh point my truck would not crank. Charged battery & finally found a wire that was hot to the touch. It was pinched on the trailer wire & was heating up teh wire & draining my battery down on my truck. Maybe you have a pinched wire that is being grounded to some metal on the boat. Long shot but might work.

maybe 10 seconds for normal operation
what year is the motor

Motor is a 2006.

Hooked the battery cables back up, hooked the water hose up and no noise. Installed a battery disconnect to make sure everything is off when not in use. I needed monkey arms for that or at least a second pair of hands.

Checked air in tires, greased hubs, checked gas gauge. Now guess what, I am “hopefully” ready to go.

A bad voltage regulator will cause a continuous drain in that situation. The motor will not charge the batt if the regulator is bad. While the motor is running you should read around 13 volts.
