Need help with stereo install

I am in the process of replacing my stereo in my 22’ sea pro. I had the first one installed by custom car stereo and it lasted 5 years. Last summer, it quit putting out any sound. The display would light up, the counter would show that it was playing cd’s, etc, but no sound, even at full volume. I figured the stereo was toast and I was lucky it lasted that long.

In an effort to simplify the process of putting a new one in, I went back to ccs and bought a new unit, same brand(Alpine), so that the wiring harness plug would fit right in there and no new wiring would be needed. Just plug in the harness and the fm antenna and go, right? Wrong! I plugged the new one in, it lights up, scans thru fm stations, plays cd’s, etc., but still no sound. Same problem as the old one!

I doubt all 4 of the speakers went bad at the same time, as they sounded fine before. The fm antennae is fine too. Anybody have any suggestions before I call an electronics guy at $75/hr.?

Did they install an external amplifier?

No external amp. was ever installed. Just 4 speakers.

Cut the old connector off, install the new one, the wires should be the same color as the old one, so it will be simple. Use crimp terminals with the heat shrink to keep them sealed. You may find it was the connector the whole time…

I would bet money it is the speakers. I had four go out at the same time last year. Take a spare speaker with you and wire it down to the radio and see if it plays. If it does you know the problem. If it doesn’t then the harness is probably bad.

where do you live cawcaw. im on JI would be glad to diagnose for you. sounds pretty simple.

ft worry.

Cordray, the boat is at Ripley Light Marina. I am about to go out fishing on her now, but may be Saturday we could take a look at it if you have time. I may swing by West Marine and grab some speakers and try that real quick

if you can hold back on the purchase till we know what the problem is thats prob not a bad idea.

ft worry.

one bad speaker or short in any of the 8 wires will cause no output

I tried a new speaker with the new radio and it worked. Just that one speaker though. I ran into my buddy’s electronics guy while I was at the marina. He looked at the setup I had and suggested that I return the stereo since it was made for a car and only put out 18w per speaker, while a marine stereo would put out 50w per channel.

That means I have to cut the wires and run a new wiring harness on it. Not the end of the world, I was just trying to avoid it. He suggested Sony. Anybody tried Sony?

It looks like I will get 4 new 5" speakers and a new receiver. Suggestions?

West Marine has an excellent Sony unit on sale for $149. Works great on my boat.

Take a look at Fusion at west marine. I haven’t had any problems with it.

power output will be the same. 12v stereo installer for 23 yrs. u have a short at one speaker or wire believe me. the “car radio” will work fine but does not have the corrosion resistance that the marine radios have. that;s the only diff until u get to the higher end units that have a sealed face and r water resistant. the standard marine radios only have a coating on the board to resist corrosion nothing more water or shock resistant than that. most likely u have 1 bad speaker. the sun eats them up fairly quickly if left in the elements. turn radio off disconnect one speaker n turn back on. continue until sound comes back. when it does u found ur short(prob a voice coil)

I have an amp and speakers and use my MP3 player. Works great. MP3 player has an FM tuner, so can listed to the radio. Amp is mounted high under the console, so it’s out of the weather. Plus an MP3 player is a good bit cheaper than a marine grade head unit. And if you have an old cell phone with a music player, you could use that instead of buying an MP3 player.
