need patience immediately

my strategy seems to be working(im seeing fish in good spots) but my tactics are killing me. i am bustin too many fish. i think i need to put the fly farther to the side. the wind was a factor today causing a couple to drop right on em and blow up, but i think im getting too close. i figure its a 40/40 chance he will turn to one side or the other --the other 20 is straight at me or straight away. both of those are just bad luck. i had a couple where he just faded and i waited and then started to retrieve only to find he was still right there and spooked on the move. this is mostly just a note to myself but maybe some of yall have passed through this stage or are also stuck in it.

Hutch I am in the EXACT same boat brother… I dunno either… Some of them moved at my fly, stopped short then spooked, it was very disheartening and frustrating… Fun though

yeah the thrill is still there when you are 10 ft away and have to freeze but i still like a bent rod.

hutch, are you moving the fly, or bumping it? i try not to move a fly but let them find it, esp a fly with any sort of flash or rabbit/marabou-they will see it. crabs dont run, they hide.

Hutch, you might be wading to close to the fish b4 casting. most of todays 8wts dont load, or cast accurately, with less than 30ft of line out of tip. plus if you stay 40-50 ft away they cant sense your wading noises…

PAWLEY, I had a plant that wasn’t doing well. The guy at the plant store said, “you are probably over watering it”. “Give it LESS water”.

I said, “no, I’m definitely not overwatering it”. “Oh”, he said, “then give it MORE water”.

My point? The season is late. You have to pull out all the stops and try everything. Fast, slow, long cast, short cast, light colors, dark colors…

On my last grass fishing trip, they were everywhere and I put a crab pattern right in front of them. They swam by. Again and again. I finally smacked one on the nose and he bit like a pit bull. Caught and released. Went back to soft, light casts right in front and let it sit. Nothing. Next cast I hit the guy right between the eyes and “fish on!” Got my two fish for the day and my buddy went home fish-less. Try it ALL. Smack them in the mouth if you have to!
