Need plumbing help?

With the holidays approaching, and overtime slowing down at work, I figured I might just try to augment the income a little. Also, with the holidays approaching, maybe I can help you save a little of yours. I have been doing plumbing for about 15 years. Fixture changes, leaks, water line ran, just call me or PM me to discuss. Thanks.

Shenanigans, what do you know about tank less water heaters? Looking for a recommendation for a 1800 sqft ranch.

Shenanigans,

I have a main water valve by the foundation of my house that was a little leaky (not the water co meter valve). The pipe is the typical copper pipe, I’m guessing 1" or 1 1/4".

The handle on it corroded off, leaving only the nub. And I managed to disassemble it and try to find new parts for it, but several hardware stores told me that they can’t get those parts anymore. They sold me a few o-rings to seal it up but warned me that they would only last long enough to get a plumber to fix it. So far so good.

My guess is that the whole valve needs to be cut out and replaced, so that I have a handle and a non-leaking valve. I thought about doing this myself with shark-bite connections, but would rather have something more durable (or at least psychologically more comforting lol) since this is underground.

The only difficulty is that it’s close to the drain, and there may not be room to get a standard pipe cutter to spin around the pipe. May need to be cut with a saw or whatever.

If you’re interested, send me a PM with a rough guestimate of what I’m looking at. I know you can’t quote it without seeing it in person.

… The Cross of Christ is the anvil upon which the hammer of evil wore itself out.

PM sent

Thank you sir, for your honesty.

Not having a license does not preclude you from

being a fine, experienced craftsman…again, I appreciate your honesty.

Remember the old saying; “You get what you pay for”. As an old retired plumber, I’d like to make a few points about this practice:

  1. A plumber who works on the side is helping to put his legitimate boss out of business by undercutting which jeopardizes his own legitimate job. ( He is actually stealing business that could be his employers)
  2. A person who hires an unlicensed plumber has no safety net if there is a problem because there is no insurance, no bond, and possibly no experience at all , just word of mouth. You can only file a claim against the unlicensed plumber himself and he has nothing so you get nothing. If you have to go to court; you are the one who gets reprimanded by the judge for not hiring a legally licensed person. And you can be liable for damages and possibly fined because it it against SC state law to hire such.
  3. If an unlicensed, uninsured worker gets hurt on your property (ie: falls off ladder / sprains back lifting heavy toilet or tub / burns himself while soldering / or just slips on a wet surface and busts his noggin); the homeowner is going to have to foot the bill for his medical expenses and recovery. “Hurt in an accident / hurt on the job; call atty ???”
4)And finally, several cases of hiring the unlicensed / uninsured have resulted in cases of theft of cash and items from the homeowner and the worker just disappears.

So all I can say is remember the old saying and good luck if you choose not to,
George

Just as a quick response to item 1. I work for a Large mechanical contractor with absolutely no interest in residential anything. I, therefore, am not taking anything from them. I have been doing this for quite awhile, and while you do not know me,have never met me, or anything else, I would stand behind anything I have done, or will do. If you live in Charleston County, I have probably built/renovated several of the schools your kids or grandkids attend. As far as stealing anything from anyone, it would never happen. But again, as I said, you’ve never met me, don’t know me as anything but a name on a fishing forum, so thanks and have a nice day.

The fact that the man was so upfront about not having a license says a lot about his honesty and character.

Honesty and character? Right.
Get a bond, purchase a license; then you have honesty and character. Otherwise , you are operating illegally.
And then get a permit where required.
Hey CF building inspector; are you watching this thread?

As far as stealing from your boss; maybe he does not do residential.
However, you are stealing work from the the legitimate licensed residential contractors trying to make a living . They have overhead like license, permits, insurance, trucks, fuel, tools, office, elec. and phone, and FICA and unemployment taxes, employee health ins., etc., etc…
There is no way they can compete with an unlicensed , uninsured, unbonded fly by night.

Shenanigans, I don’t dislike you and understand you want to make some extra money. I am just trying to get you to understand the consequences of the actions you are taking. You are breaking the law and your customers who hire you are breaking the law. It’s not that difficult to comply and be legal. Please look into it for everyone’s sake.

According to the LLR, I am not breaking a law as long as I don’t exceed $200.00 for residential or $5000.00 for commercial. To reference my first post, I am offering quicker repairs ie fixture changes, etc. after my sister in law had a problem with the city side of her sewer line backing up, the city had to pay a plumber to reset her toilet. He then said if there were any problems, because her flange is set low, it would be ~$120 or more to reset it again. I find that price a bit too high. I am not looking to do a complete repipe or other more time consuming projects. But, like I would assume, there are more than a few folks on here who may appreciate a break in pricing. End rant. On another note, in the grand ancient barter system, I,am also willing to trade services for other services or whatnot. Hope everyone has a nice evening, and to Misslilly, be careful climbing back down off that high horse.
