Need some direction

I’ve flyfished on and off for a few years, mostly up in the streams of NC for trout. Moved to charleston in February, and 2 weeks ago my dad bought me a saltwater outfit. Caught some Pompano and some other strange fish down in Seaside, FL last week, but now that I’m back home in charleston I’d love to start fly fishing here. My problem, like most young post-grad guys is that I have no boat or kayak. I went out to Folly today to see if there was any access to some flats and I couldn’t find anything. I spotted some areas around JI too, but seemed pretty inaccessible on foot. I don’t fish often but I’d love for it to become a nice evening stress reliever. Any direction on where I can wade in or even fish from land? Doesn’t need to be your secret hole or anything like that, but I’d love to find a place besides the beach where I can get back into the groove. Been reading the board for several days, and have greatly enjoyed it!

INCOMING!!!

Sorry, just preparing you for what might happen after that post… Do yourself a favor, go up to the top of the page under “Services”, choose the “Search” function and do some footwork in the history department. Tons of info there, maybe then go to Lowcountry and talk to them, then re-visit the “Search” function to narrow down your questions. Go try it a few times, sink up to your armpits in the mud so you will understand the difference in grass color and distribution, post a report with a few pictures, then ask a specific question or two. A lot of people are jaded with people asking questions before they do some legwork.

Good luck!

No I understand, I’ve done some research on here, and searched plenty of websites. I use a lot of sports messageboards so I get your point about searching thru the archives. I stopped by lowcountry today, but I was in a hurry to get to a meeting and didn’t have time to ask about spots. I will keep searching, thanks for the heads up.

The drive to flats are everywhere…the ones that become “well” known will get pressure on every good tide. Do some scouting via Flash Earth…look to see where major creeks come up into the marsh. The low grass is where you want to be walking…avoid the taller grass growing along the creeks feeding the marsh…this is the sticky black mud. Usually areas around little islands are pretty firm…just try and stick to the short grass and you will be fine…if the short grass is close to good feeder creeks/and there are lots of fiddlers…you will see fish…also…look for other life…Herons, Gulls, baitfish, if that is happening you are in the right place…
