Have red fished for several years in the Georgetown area and do fairly well, live bait and cut bait. I can’t get the hang of trout fishing. I would appreciate some tips and pointers :
Live bait tips
Artificials
Types of rigs
Do they tolerate brackish water as well as reds?
Preferred depths, stage of tide, etc
If you’re in the area tomorrow, they’re having a trout seminar at Haddrells Point West Ashley at 6PM. Check under “upcoming events” forum.

Some prefer low incoming tide, some high outgoing. Anywhere where the water is moving, rips, drop offs, around structure…And don’t forget to cast, cast, cast…Slow trolling works also if you are having trouble finding them. I haven’t caught them in brackish water, but that doesn’t mean they are not there. My go to baits for trout are:
squiggly tail grubs (white, green, smoke)
pretty much anything gulp (white seems to be the strongest for me)
Bass Assassin Paddle Tails (electric chicken is one of the most popular)
Top Water (I really just started this year, but it is becoming my favorite, I have been using the Heddon)
D.O.A
Trout Trick is pretty popular. They work but are not super big in my arsenal.
If you keep the above in your box with some 1/4 oz. jig heads it should be about all you will need to catch a trout, or several hundred.
On casting I will vary the retrieve speed and presentation slightly until I find what they like.
Don’t forget to move spots…Sometimes you have to move a lot. And cast, cast, cast…

Narcosis
Absolutely. We find em one day in a hole 1 hour before outgoing tide and catch a bunch, next day, same hole, same tide - no trout. Be ready to find them, if they are not biting where you are then move.
I have had the most success at drop off’s where there is a mud flat, or oyster bank and the water runs across it. I fish the drop off casting from up-current, and drag my bait up the hill.
Excellent info above! If you’ll notice, most post include “moving” the bait. Trout very rarely hit a stationary bait. They may whack it in between hops, drags, pops, twitches, or floating downstream under a cork, but very rarely will you catch them with any consistency soaking a bait. The exact presentation will be trial and error, a combination of what works for you combined on what the trout respond to. Here’s a few things that work for us during the cooler months. (And trout catches can be some of the best during the cooler/cold weather) http://capt-tim.blogspot.com/2012/01/wintertime-trout-tacticsdoa-shrimp.html http://capt-tim.blogspot.com/2010/12/wintertime-tactics-art-of-jig.html
I fish a lot of creeks and rice field ditches for reds, 4 - 12 ft. Deep. Will these areas hold trout as we’ll, even if the water is brackish?
I am mainly a live bait or cut bait fisherman. Stick a rod in a holder and wait on a bite.
I’ll have to get used to casting and working for my fish…
Usually where you can find redfish you can find trout. If you are more of a “Lazy” fisherman (I get it, not being sarcastic!) then you can try suspending that live bait under a cork. vary the length of the leader. Also somebody showed me a trick since trout are so soft in the bite, they were using Treble hooks for more consistent hook-ups. Havent tried it myself but maybe worthwhile.

Please don't do that! Yeah, it may ctch the trout, but its hell on a fish's mouth. Use a small circle hook, and when the float goes under, start reeling. Sounds like where your at would be a decent wintet trout area, deeper holes and bends.. fish grubs on light jig heads and mirrolure 17MR

14’ Skiff-“Redfish Reaper”
I had not really considered that since I use them off-shore when kingfishing, but it’s a great point. Either way circle hooks work well for me. So far i’ve done well with the fall trout here.
Some tips for fishing live shrimp on a cork (which is a great way to catch them). Hook the shrimp thru the head(from bottom to top or across ways) at the horn but dont puncture the black round thing. This way your shrimp will stay alive and his legs will move and he will ficker, which attracts the trout. Make sure your cork can move easily up and down the wire.I like the bomber paradise popper because it has a titanium wire, which will remain straight, allowing the cork and beads to move freely when you pop it. This sounds like a shrimp flickering and attracts the fish. For trout Pop the cork pretty often and hard enough that the beads will click, but no so hard you loose or kill your live bait. They will hit it after you pop it.
I’d rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave.
Lazy fisherman - LOL - No offense taken. I fish with the wife and kids most of the time. 8 - 10 rods in holders. I long for the day when I can be lazy… LOL.
Seriously, I do appreciate all of the comments. This is very good information, that I will try.
Do you think a gulp bait or grub, electric chicken, will work under a popping cork?
About 26" of leader under the afore mentioned (jimmyaadams)paradise popper and a 1/4 oz DOA shrimp (clear w/gold or clear w/red) is deadly. pop 'bout every 3 seconds or so.
