need some tips

on how to keep my weights seperated on my poles while in transit-- seems like everytime i move and get ready to put the rods back out this time of yr (downrod season) i spend the first 15 minutes untangleing the lines – usually use 2oz and if 2 poles even think about getting close to each other they will wrap up–hooks are stuck to the handles which leaves the weights usually around the tips of the poles–even happens in upright rod holders if they get too close to one another–really a pain but i dont have enough room on the boat to seperate every one of them–help ! im losing valuable fishing time everytime this happens

A buck a piece. Just wrap around the rod/line right at the weight. You should be able to bundle 10 rods together and not have a tangle from weights looping around each other.

Bread ties, and pieces of electrical wire will work as well if you are cheap. These are rubberized though and last a long time.

hold the sinker out and spin the rod. It will wrap itself around the rod. Once it gets tight it will stay there. Or you can use the little Velcro things.

To each his own but 6-7’ leaders??? I run 3-4’ leaders, which will put my lead couple feet down from the tip. Pull main line away from rod, wrap weight around rod thin “pin” it with the main line you pulled away from the rod. I bundle anywhere from 10-22 rods this way with no tangles. Just make sure you undo the weight FIRST when you are putting lines back out. If you dont you will spend 5min untangling the weight from the line…

yep i use as long as a leader as i can get away with–usually 6 ft on downrods and when pulling boards ill go up to 10 or 12 ft–have tried spinning the weight around the rod–either im not spinning it tight enough or my boat gremlins like to play tricks on me while im riding and unspin it before i get to where im going --will ck into the rubberized ties–saw something cple yrs back that i liked the looks of for this but dont know where to get em–was a velcro closure that wrapped around the rod and weight --prob about the size of your hand when it was open–but havent ever seen them in stores or advertised anywhere

Another way is to just get the weight further down the rod so the tips aren’t swaying and tangling. You can wrap the leader around the reel and then secure the hook up on an eye wrap. That should get the weight down to the back bone of the rod and should be better.

I do the same thing as Steelytom and Murraymaker EXCEPT that I do not wrap the weight around the eyes of the rod …

I’ll pinch and hold the line closest to the eye ABOVE the weight then pull the line out and spin the rod tight using the eye above the weight as the “pin” once the line gets tight …

This way I avoid damaging the rod with the weight and I always know where to start (always start at the eye above the weight) when “unrolling” the rod …

By the end of the day you’ll have another 10 ways to do it and none of them will be “wrong” …

Tight Lines …

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

poboy, is this what you are talking about?

They work well but get kinda expensive when you buy a bunch of them. Murrymaker showed me his trick and I like it. Unfortunately all my Striper rods already have the telltale missing paint right where the weight used to beat the crap out of it.

What would be the advantage to such a long leader? Seems like it would be cumbersome and increase tangles in the water and in storage.

I have used bread ties on long leaders on some off shore rods, now some one help me with the leaders on U rigs!

SCGMC-that is close to what i was talking about but i think the bass pro are a heavier quaility than what im looking for–gonna try the wrapping like yall suggested nxt trip–maybe itll work–as far as the leaders–usually where i fish this time of yr w downrods is open water --lots of boat traffic–lots of waves–ive noticed in yrs past that the bait on the longer leaders seem to stay alive a little longer–my theory on that is they have more leader so more slack between the bait and the weight --dont get snatched around as bad i would think–that and my buddy that has been fishing for these fish for many more yrs than me has always said the longer the leader the better and proven it too me a cple times tied up next to each other on the rope at the hill

Harbor Freight has a roll of Velcro that would work perfect. Male on one side female on the other. You just cut off a piece and wrap it around.

Unless you are fishing out of a 30’ boat, I cannot understand why you would fish more than an 3’ leader.

When you put your rods down with a 3’ leader, the rod tips need to be more than 6’ apart, otherwise, the baits will swim together and you will have a tangled mess!

Been there.^^^^ A few yrs. ago, I had a customer that guided on the Hill.(23’ boat) He swore by 5-6’ leaders. I (just starting out striper fishing) went and changed all my rigs to 5-6’ leaders. Let me tell you, with a 14’ boat I had a real tangled mess.
Now my leaders are 3’ or less.
