I just finished the WORST bow season of my life having killed only one doe that dressed out at only 90 pounds. I have two hunt-by-permission properties. On one property I saw NO DEER. On my other I was continually plagued by dog hunters and big bore rifles of the type that make you jump out of your pants.
Now that the season is over my thinking has been "well I’m just going to have to get my licks in early, be the first in the woods come 08/15/14 you know and no slacking off this time now that I know what I’m up against. Now here is my little problem.
A friend of mine, who I now think is not my friend, said “…hey I’ve been squirrel hunting over at Billy’s farm and he said to say hello…”. Now this has made me angry but I’m keeping that to myself because I want to have the right response because this is now the only place I have to hunt.
Should I be angry that someone appears to be moving in on my turf? Should I be angry that someone is shooting a gun on a property where I desperately need the deer to be undisturbed until opening day? What feelings of mine are valid?
I texted my “buddy” (un-huh)that I’d been over to his land shooting squirrels and did he want any and got no response, which is to say I’m thinking he didn’t appreciate me even joking that way.
Am I crazy to worry about this? I am so annoyed that this person who is supposed to be my friend would be shooting squirrels on a property which sooo pressured already and on which I have had such a hard bow season.
When you hold the deed or make the mortgage then you can say what happens on the property. Be grateful you have access and learn the hunt the land. Shooting squirrels and moving through there aren’t driving the deer off, it might displace them but they’ll be back. Maybe you didn’t see deer because of something you did or didn’t do.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I can tell from your 4 previous posts that your an idiot. Now that that’s out of the way it’s not your land, so you have nothing to say. The only person you can blame for not being successful is yourself, a deer isn’t hard to kill.
For one you have me confused on plagued by big bore rifles and dog hunters. Usually Dog hunting and rifle hunting are two different things.
Since it is not your property and you can not control what goes on, enjoy the fact that you are able to hunt it. Use the dog hunters to your advantage and take a shotgun in the stand with you. If dogs are running they are more than likely chasing something.
Also a dressed out 90lb doe is not so bad for our area. I believe she would have been in the 120-135 pound range non dressed.
Hey I know I don’t fit in here but WOW! You can cut the RAGE with a knife. I didn’t expect to be attacked or insulted. This hunting community is “something” but I’m not sure what. Certainly the word defensive comes to mind. And the name calling that’s just childish. Does anybody in the forum go to church!?!
Of course one knows that one doesn’t make rules on unowned land. Stating the obvious isn’t what I was after. And what would lead readers to think I’m ungrateful for having a place to hunt in still an unknown to me.
I did find the opinion that the squirrel hunting won’t bother the deer to be helpful.
I feel truly blessed to not be from around here. Southern hospitality in Charleston my eye. How this place each year makes a favorites list for destinations I’ll never know.
I get the feeling that many of the respondents to my post are separated from their teeth…and don’t care.
You guys that angrily insulted me don’t know (probably b/c you have never been outside Charleston Cnty) that the deer hunting in this area is the worst. If you did you’d do something about it like QDM, or something as simple as not shooting every buck and doe that sticks their head up. The poor things don’t have a chance to make a rub or a scrape b/c they have to focus fully on survival and nocturnalization. But yeah I don’t know what I’m doing in the woods b/c I use a bow and refuse to use guns, dogs, and bait.
Also I haven’t read my previous posts but I do recall one guy actually saying I should shoot my dog. Uh-huh. What a great community I now live in. I regret trying to find a home for him whenever that was b/c he has and continues to be a wonderful animal and blood trailer. I’m so sorry I wrote about him that day and don’t feel like giving him away anymore. So sue me.
Responders today ought to be ashamed of themselves. I mistook this forum as a way for the hunting community to help one another. But make no mistake I got the message: don’t post again/go away/you’re an outsider. So you won’t hear another peep.
Thank you Docsorders. Now that’s a really great idea and honestly I hadn’t thought of that. He’s gotten plenty of the beer that he likes and I gave the family a giant turkey at TG which seemed to be a big hit. Now I’m wondering if your suggestion for some coin might resonate. Thank you.
And Mhebard your post is just plain hilarious and I am laughing at myself for letting those guys get to me. Thanks for reeling me in. Good day fellas.

when you ask for advice in an open forum you get what you get, people will say things on a forum that they won’t say in person, or some of us are the same in both places
you asked for advice and you received responses, the fact that you didn’t exactly like some of them is, well, you’re problem not ours,
regardless, put on your big girl panties and get over it
it’s interesting how many have resisted responding to your idiot remarks on 1-15, you basically insulted all of us, but no problem
I’ve become accustomed to not having all my teeth, the kids think it’s funny when I leave rows of corn on the cob
we also are truly blessed that you are not from around here, on that point we agree
I did actually read the Who Moved My Cheese book, well not really - my kid read it to me, after a few pages I went to the frig and the cheese was where it always was, instead of reading further we went hunting and harvested one of those bucks you can’t seem to find
learn to laugh, you’ll be happier, well at least as happy as one can be knowing you’re from Memphis and not Charleston
That picture shows Memphis Blaze Orange! It’s all the rage for the Urban Memphis hunting crowd. It combines the latest Retro Fashion statement, while meeting all hunter safety requirments! You might not be from around here but you can still show the Yokels how they don’t have to be all Duck Dynasty!
