Need to horn in...

I got through last season without an operating horn on my 1996 Seapro 180CC, but vowed to fix it before this season.

I have a new switch and horn (well, bought them last year) when the old horn went on the blink. Long story short, everything works great on the dash panel (except for my erratic tachometer), but I can’t get power to the horn switch. I know that the horn is working, because I jumped it from my accessory power line. I metered the line in to the switch, but am getting nothing. I didn’t have a backup swith, but I did check with a new on/off toggle switch - nothing.

All the connections are tight and I have even replaced a few that I thought were suspect. I don’t have a wiring diagram to this boat, but I do have one to a Seapro 2100 and they are similar.

Anybody have any ideas on what I do next to troubleshoot this? I am having a hard time identifying where some of the wires go as they come out of the bundle, not to mention that if you’re any bigger than Tom Thumb it’s darn near impossible to work in there.

Thanks.

Your wire could be corroded inside causeing the problem. Can you pull the wire at all. I would tie a piece of string to it and gently tug on it from other end. Have someone to watch it to see if it moves. You could also hook another piece of eire to one end and hook a meter to the ends and check for continuity.

It could also be the tension screw on the horn itself. Try loosening it and give it another whirl. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the help. I am almost ready to wire the horn off the accessory power. But it gripes me not to be able to find the problem.

Chris, I will check for a blown fuse, but I don’t think that’s it. I will report back later.

I have had wires corrode enough to where they will check out fine on a continuity check but are not able operate an item such as a pump or horn that pulls a fair amount of amps. Can be difficult to trouble shoot.
