Need to Replace the Starter?

Went to head out today and couldn’t get the enginge to start. Could hear the starter spinning but the little gear that meshes with the flywheel was not raising up high enough to reach the flywheel.

I’m guessing the starter needs to be replaced but wanted to confirm there wasn’t an easy fix before I spent a few hundred bucks for a new one.

Thanks for the help.

Sometimes the starter shaft can be cleaned and lightly lubed, and will work just fine. You might want to check your battery and all battery cable connections too, before replacing the starter? Hope this helps! Seeya, Scott

run jumper cables to the starter before you pronounce it dead
often you will have corrosion in a cable not letting enough power to the starter

More likely a weak battery. Check that first… and remove/clean/re-attach all connections. Charge it well and get it load tested. When you’re sure you have solid power getting to the starter, if it still doesn’t work, you may have starter or solenoid issues.

Thanks everyone. These are new batteries and are being maintained by an onboard charger.

CHRIS - Are you saying run red-to-red, black-to-black from one of my batteries to the starter? If so, I assume this will immediately engage the starter and I will not need to turn the key. Correct?

that is correct. as long as the key is off, the motor will not start.
you will get a spark, so be prepared for that.
