I am about to pick up a used jon boat, a 14’ alumacraft. The trolling motor will be my only form of propulsion for a while until I get a tiller outboard on it.
Do I really need a “saltwater” edition motor?
If anyone has a trolling motor for sale, PM me. I’m only interested in 12v models, and would prefer a stern mount, but I could use a bow mount if the price was right.
I would get a bow mount. You really won’t regret after you get the tiller motor and you want it purely for fishing

What is the advantage of the bow mount? On a jon, you can clamp a stern mount anywhere you want it. I actually plan to mount it to the front even if I don’t have the outboard.
Is it mainly because you can fold it up onto the bow? I’ve never used one.
For a small jon boat, you’ll be okay with the clamp-on one…I think yakman is talking about the foot-controlled ones that mount on the bow of the boat.
I think the saltwater versions are made a little beefier and corrosion-resistant than the standard models…

Foot controlled would be nice, but I’m slumming it with this jon boat and they can be pricey. The only thing I’m willing to pay top notch for is the outboard, and that’s not happening until I get a tax return lol. I’ll be putting some custom made wooden oars on the jon as backup, along with a fervent prayer that I’ll never need to use them lol.
Tax return? Haven’t you heard, there will be no tax returns this year. People less fortunate than you need that $.

I have an older foot controlled, Motorguide III, (I think). Needs a little TLC, but should work until you can afford a better unit. You can have if you’re going to use it on your boat. In the Upstate here, so we’ll have to figure a way to get it down to you? I’m going to try and make the Oyster Roast, but we might find a quicker option? PM if interested.

Can the foot controlled models be modded to be used as a tiller style? I may not actually be getting the jon boat, I’m not sure at this point. I may revert to getting that square stern canoe, I really think it fits what I’m going to do a little better than the jon boat (car-top/truck-top possibility).
I am thinking I should go with a transom mount. If anyone has a transom mount trolling motor for sale, let me know. I don’t think I’m going with the bigger jon boat right now, just not the right time to be getting something I must trailer.
