need yak buying advice please

forgive my ignorance…

my 12 yr old wants one to fish from. He’s around 135 lbs. he’d use it in the creeks around here.

any advice is appreciated. his old man is broke, so keep that in mind.

thanks a bunch.

DolphinD at Time Out Sports is the man to get yaks from.
If looking for a more inexpensive/entry level one can try the Jazz sit on top kayak from Mainstream, definitly a entry level kayak but handles very well in the rivers, marshes, surf. Some of the larger chains such as West Marine, etc… carry it. Used to sell for $199. at Costco with a paddle.

Plus it was designed and originally manufactured by a CF.com member.

Keep one eye on Craigslist. If you do a search for “kayak” on the main page, you will often see them where you wouldnt expect it like, estate sales, garage sails, etc. I’ve gotten lots of good stuff on Craigslist this way.

at 135 he can fish from nearly anything. I’d ask if his head is screwed on straight before I make a yak recommendation. Some kids I’d feel good putting in a small recreational boat, other’s I’d want them in something far more stable.

I really like Pungo and Pamlico sit ins. A Mainstream Jazz or Kingfish is a pretty inexpensive sit on top. The CF’er doesn’t take enough credit for the Jazz… It’s a good boat. It does exactly what it was intended for at a very low price.

great point. I am pondering this presently and think this son would be responsible.

We’ve got the New perception Tribes in stock now. The 10 footer goes for $495, and the 11.5 goes for 595. Fairly basic sit on top, but very stable, paddles nice, and comes with a lifetime warranty. here are the links to these models:

I have a Pelican castaway 116 I am selling… $300… my first yak and a great starter boat… it’s only 11ft and a great creek boat but I have fished it in dang near every body of water around Charleston and never had a problem… well except the one time I forgot to close the plug and almost sank myself but that was my fault , stable enough to comfortably fish from, although there won;t be any standing for me, maybe your son could do it wiht some practice but it’s a good beginner boat. I have a milk crate for it and a paddle for it as well… Gimme a hoot if you’re interested…
