With school starting back this week, wanted to take my nephew fishing in hopes putting him on his first saltwater fish. He, the wife and I left Charlotte around 7:00 Saturday morning headed for the Lowcountry. Hooked up the boat shortly after 11:00 only to realize both batteries were dead. Had the facility where we keep the boat quick-charge the motor battery and headed to the landing. Back the boat into the water, turn the key and…nothing. Pull the boat out of the water, head back to the facility and they switch the battery. Head back to the ramp, launch the boat, and head to the first spot. Anchor-up looking for sharks (thanks, Penny), whiting and/or anything to keep the nephew engaged. Have to move because the wind and breakers make the wife queasy. Pull anchor and move on. Shortly after we begin our move to the next spot I realize I’ve left our bait bucket hanging over the side just as the lid pops off and I unintentionally “pardon” our live bait. Fish a few spots with dead shrimp and artificials but no luck. Getting late in the day, nothing to show for our efforts, and wife offers to run and get more bait if I drop her off at the dock. Drop her off and putt around near the landing for about twenty minutes. Pick her back up and head off to last spot. Anchor up, cast out, and bam!-fish on! Hand the rod to the nephew, and he calmly pulls in his first redfish! Quick pics and high-fives, release the “daymaker” to fight another day, and cast back out. Bam!-fish on! Hand the rod to the wife, and she lands her first redfish! Snap a couple of picks, re-bait and cast. Bam!-fish on! I take this one and land our third fish in about five minutes! All rats, but mission accomplished. Sorry for the ramble, but thank God for the Lowcountry!

Great job Scott nothing better then seeing someone catch there first saltwater fish even better when you put them on them. And trust me I’ve had those days with the battery and bait. Went offshore one time just realize we left our tackle bag and bait in the cooler in the truck at the landing!! Turned into a long booze cruise
Oh yeah, please excuse the Yeti hat. I’ve recently learned that only posers adorn themselves in such apparel and don’t really fish…
</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>My only thought was that a Yeti hat on a guy your size is the first time that, that hat makes sense.
Pass it along to the little man and give him something to grow into. But, I bet he already feels the pressure of catching another fish on Uncle BB’s boat. Not sure who wins the smile contest? Let’s call it a tie.
‘Preciate the responses, y’all. I can honestly say my two most memorable fishing moments were puttin’ my niece and my nephew on their first spot-tails. I can barely catch fish myself, but I’m already an addict, so I don’t mind so much when I get skunked. With them, I’m trying to pass on my obsession, so you can imagine the excitement/pride/relief I felt when we landed those fish! Makes me truly appreciate and admire those who do it for a living.
And iFly, I ain’t hairy enough, nor have I ever been to Nepal or Tibet. Holler at me, let’s go fishin’, man…
