Net Makers

Any net makers around the Charleston area?

Drag net or castnet? If its a castnet Tim Wade down in Florida. He will make exactly what you want. He has little down time though, stays busy year round.

Thanks for the input. Trying to find one local. I’ve started tying some nets. Looking for someone who can give me some pointers when needed. Tying seams and lead lines.

The last guy I knew who tied his own nets died 35 years ago at the age of 90. It’s mostly a lost art. So much easier to buy what you want today.

I bought a net from ace hardware on James Island a few years ago and it was a pretty good net before I tore it up, they said it was locally made I think Walterboro, they may still have contacts for the maker, kind of a long shot but whats a phone call.

Same here. Every local fishing village used to have a net maker, but I haven’t seen one in years. There was an old fellow in Thunderbolt who used to set up under a big oak tree on the bluff and tied nets there for 50 years. I watched him many a day, never could quite get the hang of it myself. It was certainly an art. Of course those old timers were using cotton and nylon, not mono-filament.

And you pull in those old wet cotton nets for a while you’ll see why they went to the mono!

PM me if you need some help.
I just finished a 10 footer that is made from one and one half miles of 30# power pro. There are over 65,000 stitches and 300 hours of labor. I might consider letting it go for a few grand; jk, lol.

I read the forum regularly but rarely post. I still make the occasional cast net using bonded nylon cord and the old wooden needles if you need some help let me know.
