</font id=“Comic Sans MS”>I’ve read a lot of good things about the Copahee but have never fished it. From what I’ve read, it can be tricky with the tides. Any words of wisdom before I try this area? Also, are spot tail the primary species or are the trout as abundant?
Hey Slixter
From my 6 or 7 trips there, the best advice I can give you is to check it out at a rising low tide that way you won’t get stuck high and dry. I get out of the shallow water (soon to be dry land) about 2 hours before the falling low tide hits dead low (with an average tide height that is) to make sure I don’t get stuck. Remember that the water can drop (or rise) about 1 inch ever 5 minutes or so.
Another idea is go to the landing at low tide just to check the area out with binoculars to see what’s dry at low tide. At low tide the creek out to the bay is firm enough to walk your kayak out to deeper water.
Ask around about the signs to Copahee landing on HWY 17, as I mentioned in other postings, the north bound sign was knocked down a few weeks ago by a vehicle accident of some sort.
I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of spot tails in that area :).

Slixter,
Reds are very abundant in the sound, as are flounder and trout. the later of which you’ll need to check out the deeper creeks and channels to find. If you want to target reds here is my advice. Arrive 2hrs before low tide, and fish until 2hrs after. That will give you enough water to get in and out, and will allow you to sight fish on the low tide. try pushing up into the shallower areas around the oyster bars. also look for birds, hint, hint… you may be able to get into the water sooner or take out sooner that the two hr window depending on the moon phase and fluctuation of the tide, but 2 hrs is usually a safe window…
Good luck, and tight lines!!

Thanks guys. I’ve fished the harbor and all points south for many years but only ventured up the ICW a few times. Time to expand my area, thanks for the insight. Now I just have to find the time to wet a line. Any word on the sign on Hwy. 17?
