Never tie your anchor line to the stern.

The same thing killed a former NFL player and 2 former college players in the Gulf of Mexico in 2009. There was a lone survivor who told the investigators they tried to free the anchor by pulling it from the stern and capsized the boat. Good reminder to everyone not to do this and good job helping them out. http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/improper-anchoring-flipped-nfl-players-boat-in-gulf-accident-that-killed/987524

Not at Georgetown… And if I did see a “larger” vessel, the wake would come from the front of the boat, because the back would be facing the jetty.

If I saw something big coming, I’d have the boat cranked to make sure I’d have instant power if needed.

IMHO, it’s a case-by-case basis. I’ve done this for years and I’ve yet to be the slightest bit concerned about it.

I appreciate y’all’s insight.

Obviously it doesn't happen every time. Do what you will. Just write down the coordinates so we can catch sheepshead on it later.

simple physics. by design, the stern of a vessel has shortest freeboard on the entire boat. add in your motor, that freeboard just got shorter. add in your stern anchor, that freeboard just got shorter. add power, here comes the water. now your freaking out that your taking on water so you kill the power. the stretch you caused in the anchor line contracts, gets tight, and pulls the boat back and down, usually causing total loss. people die from this every year. easily one of the top most preventable boating accidents. always anchor from the bow with the vessel faced into the sea. applaud Capt. Fritz on the rescue.

Wasn’t this how the 3 football players drowned out in the ocean. Anchored off the stern and it swamped the boat. Put that anchor on the bow and if stuck anchor, pull forward and try to release in opposite direction, or pull it straight up. If not that, then cut the line. Anchor is cheap compared to life.

USMCSilver hasn’t responded in a while… I bet he anchored off the stern anyway to prove conventional wisdom wrong, and is now lost at sea…

When I was in the core, this dude put his anchor in my stern, and it was not a good thing.

I don’t really see how that could happen unless the seas started coming over the back too fast and it got swamped. It seems like pulling a stuck anchor from the stern…well, I just don’t think there’d be enough thrust to dip the stern low enough to take water that quickly.

I use double at the jetties. I’ve never seen it as possibly being problematic unless the seas really kicked up quickly. I also have a big knife in a rod holder on the leaning post.

Asked and answered.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

I’ll leave it as a “situation dictates” argument.

No one ever talks about the rode or length of anchor line even if anchored the right way off the Bow

its supposed to be 3ft for every 1ft of depth for a reason

Many boats have been swamped with to short anchor line not being able to ride over a big wake from another boat

I know a friend I was with had 25ft of anchor line in 15ft of water in the harbor - almost sunk our boat

The Coast Guard recommend 7 to 1 ratio for anchoring which is ridiculous. When we are fishing offshore in 120’ I generally put out about 200 feet of rope with a long length of heavy chain.
