Never tie your anchor line to the stern.

Unless you really know what you are doing. Yesterday afternoon I came across this boat that had flipped over in the harbor. They had their anchor get hung on the bottom and tried to pull it up by tying off to the stern. BAD IDEA. Thankfully no one was hurt.

After the rescue I continued on with my charter and landed some nice reds.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

Saw the boat too, but they had already been picked up by the time we came in from offshore

13 years of reading Cf.com and I’ve only commented a few times here!

However this needed to be mentioned about his efforts!

Capt. FvK did an outstanding job helping these people during their capsized event. Thank you for helping them out!

STChas had the boat righted and dry by 5:10pm. His cell phone somehow was still exactly in the boat where he left it on-top of the console but NOT in a “Life-proof, etc.” Weird that it did not fall out of the boat in the water. Oh well!

I don’t really see how that could happen unless the seas started coming over the back too fast and it got swamped. It seems like pulling a stuck anchor from the stern…well, I just don’t think there’d be enough thrust to dip the stern low enough to take water that quickly.

I use double at the jetties. I’ve never seen it as possibly being problematic unless the seas really kicked up quickly. I also have a big knife in a rod holder on the leaning post. :slight_smile:

Stretch in nylon line will pull back toward the anchor once ya back off the throttle.

Folks off Tampa lost their lives awhile back attempting to recover an anchor by pulling from aft.

If ya can’t free up a stuck anchor, cut your losses to line, chain and anchor. Parting a line and having it injure someone is unacceptable as well.

Carry two rigs. A second set-up cost less than most folks spend on coolers. Back up rig sufficient to keep ya off the rocks if ya have propulsion issues coming back into a harbor.

People die regularly from anchoring by the stern, and many boats are lost. Never do that, unless you are in a tiny creek with zero boat traffic. Keep your bow into the sea, always!

The only physics you have to understand is that boats capsize from anchoring off the stern.

When we came back in from offshore that day, one of my crew said, “I wonder what happened”. My reply was “Probably anchoring from the stern”. Even if the throttle is not used, a good current or boat wake can be enough to pull the stern down.

I’ve got to ask. By use double, do you mean anchor off the bow and stern at the jetties? Or two off the bow?

One at the bow pointing towards the sea and one at the stern tossed up near the jetties.

I REALLY don’t think I’d ever have to concern myself with sinking like that… Basically, nothing is coming over my stern unless it’s some epic rogue wave or tsunami.

Water current will do it alone even if you are just anchored and not under power. I almost had a jon boat go down once in the Congaree same way. I was anchored and catfishing. Had been there a while. Anchor broke loose from bottom - started sliding and boat moving down stream - I figured ah it will grab in a second - it did - anchor hung again -and it’s pulling down - fire drill to get motor started - water pulled back down and took at least 15gal over the stern before I got it running and in gear to back off of it. Didn’t have time to grab the knife in the holder beside my cold beer. It happens too quick. Know that!!! Just don’t do it!!

Yeah, because it's not like you would see large ships throwing big wakes inside of the Jetties!

Not at Georgetown… And if I did see a “larger” vessel, the wake would come from the front of the boat, because the back would be facing the jetty.

If I saw something big coming, I’d have the boat cranked to make sure I’d have instant power if needed.

IMHO, it’s a case-by-case basis. I’ve done this for years and I’ve yet to be the slightest bit concerned about it.
