I started taking my son out in the woods when he was 18 months old and now that he is 3 we are all about "shooting deer". So when I came home from work early on Friday to go on a dove shoot he stopped eating lunch as soon as the "gun suitcase" came out and started packing his own bag, toy trucks and rain boots. Not too much to say after that except "Momma, the boys are going dove hunting". After a short discussion on what a dove was we were packed and ready to go.
We got to the field (30 min late of course) had to pee, decide what trucks to bring and put on sun screen. At that point I realized it was HOT. Too hot for a kid sit in the middle of a field in the sun, so we walked down a fence line away from the other shooters and set up under a huge oak tree complete with a hole and vines. After setting up his chair and getting him settled in. I looked for snakes in and around the tree and any other things that could cause issues. Then we were all set! Bright yellow trucks in hand we were dove hunting.
I am a bit of a gun safety freak so the shot gun was broke over the fence on my hat (so it wouldn?t scratch) every time a bird flew by it was bit of a fire drill making sure he was behind me, had on his ear muffs and loading the gun. I learned two things 1. That dove hunting under an oak tree is not a hot spot for fast shooting action and 2. I would rather shoot one dove in an afternoon with my son than a limit on my own.
