New 100 lb class spinning reels

I’m in the process of picking out some good spinning reels to replace my behemoth 6/0 reels. The new Shimano Stella SWB’s look awesome and I’ve been able to use one for reel/real. I’m hooked. What other reels are in this class to consider? They are so light and small, and castable! Anybody use the Dyneema line on eBay?

your best bet is head over to http://360tuna.com/ they are kinda the standard for all things top tier spinner gear.odds are your going to be looking at stella’s like you mentioned.

allot of the go to braid is a variation of dyneema… diawa boat braid is actually a dynemma but a higher quality than the ebay kinda… diawa boat braid seems to be a go to braid for the higher end reels… i have a few guys in japan i talk to who got me hooked on a japaneese dyneema its metered like the boat braid and im paying like 20bu for 600 yds of 65-80lb test… its in pe not lbs… iirc its like pe6 i use… when i do order my spools i tend to buy about 5 since it comes from japan…

may be a dumb suggestion but check out alan hawk http://www.alanhawk.com/ and his reviews and list… you may be surprised how much of a spinner you can get for 300 dollars. it will show you the running list of the super spinners… as well as some very good spinners like fin nor lt100,cabo80 and such… they are all listed on his list of budget reels…

if you read some of those alan hawk reviews you will find out some cool info. read over the spheros review and at the end he talks about how the spheros is 95% mechanically the same as the saragosa and many of the differences are more esthetic than mechanical

interesting reads…

Quantum Boca and Cabo are the best values. Fin Nor Lethal is made by the same company with a little less high end components but still a good value. The Cabo and Boca drag smoothness are noticeably better than the Fin Nor Lethal’s. Aside from that, they are almost identical. A jerky drag in a spinning reel, however, can blow out the anti-reverse bearing, so drag being smooth at high drag pressures is critical on these reels.

A Shimano Stella is a nice reel, but it is absolutely not worth paying 5x more when it is filled with so many components that will not hold up to abuse. The new models are more durable, I will give them that, but they went even more crazy with their pricing when they came out. The only place it is capable of more than another spinning reel is in its 30K size, which is absolute overkill for around here IMO. It’s a 20K with bigger spool, so you actually have less power drag-wise than the 20K. What most will do with 80-100lb braid on huge fish with that reel is hold the spool while the fish is hanging in a point in the water column though.

The Saragosa is also a good value, but not as good as a Quantum Boca IMO.

If you want to drop 1,000.00 on a spinning reel, get something that will last decades like a Van Staal.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Release Reels puts out. All of their stuff seems to have higher gear ratios and higher IPT than I prefer for my styles of fishing. I’m hoping to see a spinning reel with a more moderate IPT rate.

I got a 10000SW Saragosa last spring and love it the few times I was able to use it

Agree. I’ve used many of the above mentioned, like Shimano a lot, but the Quantum Cabos are my favorites. I’ve got 5 of them. Smoothest drags I’ve ever used, for the money.

The spheros are awesome …have owned many bocas and cabos which I liked but love the spheros and it doesn’t break the bank…bought 3 more on eBay the other day for around 200$ a pop… Drag is silk

I have 2 Saragosas and 2 Stellas…love em and no regrets. Both are 8 and 10k models.

Most of the fish I catch are under 100 lbs. I’m sure that’s true for most here. If I get to troll I’ll use the boat owner’s gear… but I bottom fish mostly for meat fish. I REALLY APPRECIATE all this ■■■■■■■■. I did pick up a 500M spool of Dyneema rated to 100 lbs, it’s not breaking at 110 in 3 tries. Interesting. So I’m leaning towards the Cabo to get started for my next outing… so now what rod?

And… I guess they have some new reels? 100/120 Cabo’s? PSTE?

Courtland or Josh at SouthernDrawl can get these for you as well.

I have 2 of the Black Hole 250g Black Hole jigging Rods that my Stellas are on and a 150g Jigging Master Power Spell that my 8k Saragosa is mounted on.

My 10k Saragosa is mounted on the Black Hole Magic Eye and used for casting/popping topwater.

Good stuff!!

By the way, Courtland is the one that got me hooked on this stuff, so don’t just take my word for it:smiley:!

No regrets either.

There’s a good article on trolling and jigging setups by Capt. Jamie Holcombe in the latest issue of Coastal Angler, including rod and reel suggestions and pairings.

Picked up a new PSTE Boca 100 and a 5’10" Tiger jigging rod. I figured for a 5 yr warranty on the Tiger rod, that’s not bad, it’s light and should get me through a year trying this out. I almost went with the Trevala, may get one later if unhappy with the Shakespeare.

Also: I ordered up a PSTE Boca 80 with TBD on spinning rod for it.

You will be really happy with those.

FYI, most of the better quality spectra braids are underrated for breaking strength. 80lb jerry brown 16 strand typically breaks around 115-120lbs. Most 100lb braids will test around 125lbs. 60 and 65lb JB will break up around 90lbs in machine tests.

An Aussie named Paulus has a substantial database on his website of the true breaking tests of dozens of brands, tests and colors of spectra and dyneema if you are interested in really seeing good data on these lines.

Most knots that people tie in braid will drop the strength 25-30% at a minimum, so learn to knotless splice or knots like the red Philips or sebile to utilize all of a line’s strength, save money, and get more yardage on your spools (by using smaller diameter braid). Courtland and his guys at Southern Drawl are pro’s on knotless splicing. You don’t necessarily need anything special unless you’re dealing with smaller 40-65lb stuff that’s difficult to deal with.

I ordered myself the new style Boca 80 as well… Can’t wait to try that bad boy out!

Pictured are the Quantum Cabo 80 PSTE (25.2 oz) and 100 PSTE (35 oz) side by side. The rods are Ugly Stix XH Tiger Lite Spinning Jig rods (12 oz). That mono is coming off, they added it for free so I’ll just reuse it on some other reel.

sweet

i agree with phin. I bought brand new vs 300 van staal for 465.00 figured it would last for years and its drag is sick.

X2 on the Cabos, I have two in 50size, 35# of very smooth drag, nice for the $. The 80 has got 50#, 100 upwards of 60#.
