Any thoughts or advice. There is a 10 K difference in price! Is it worth it?

I dont know much about hte action craft but I know that the Maverick is a super nice boat and holds its value very well.:sunglasses:

I have a 91 model 18’10" that I’ve had for over 3 years now and I am very pleased with it. Not the lightest flats boat out there or the fastest but the ride is great and is a exelent inshore fishing and shrimping platform. The polling platform is big enough to square dance on.

I have fished on both and it depends on what your looking for. The AC will ride and fish better in the chop. The MAV will get shallower and run faster with the same HP engine. It hauls azz with the F150. I’d say fit and finish is equal and I’d give a slight edge to the AC for layout just b/c I love the flip up bench seat design

I have a AC 1720. One person I know said the 1720 poles much better than the 1820 and he has owned both. If buying new consider the 17 Action Craft in Carbon Kevlar. That makes it light enough to run w/ a carbed 90 Yammy which is a really light engine, and bulletproof. I think performance would be decent but no speed demon. A local charter captain, JR Waites I believe, has this set up and I saw it at a tourney. I wonder what WOT yields in MPH? It looked like the best of both worlds. If I had money to burn that is what I would get. But, I’d have a hard time giving mine up; its got scratches in all the right places.

1720 Action Craft is a great boat. It is drier, rides better, and polls better then the 1820 Action Craft. I’ve had both and would prefer either over the old hull Maverick 18HPX(2008 and before), which I’ve fished.
HOWEVER, if you are talking about the completely new hull design of the 2009 18HPX, which I’ve fished, this is the sweetest flats boat on the market and worth the 10K extra. Wins in all categories except price and is the envy of all the flats boat builders.

Thank you all for your responses and information. Spottailkid, I was talking about the 2009/ 2010 Hpxv-18. I was told it was a gerat improvement form the older models. Do you know what ball park range they cost? Also, what do you all consider the top five flats boat companies AND what specific boats would be in your top five?? Thanks

Retail price on new 18 HPX is between 40K-50K.

both boats are nice, but no real comparison. Craftmanship and ride is much better on the maverick. Maverick might be a little more tippy.

Pot Likker,
That 1720 kevlar boat that Feather Thower was speaking of is for sale for $17,000. It is a 2005 hull with a 2007 Yamaha 90 with 440 hours plus Bob’s Machine shop hydraulic jack plate and 6’ Power-Pole with remote control. Here is the link with pictures:

I am going to replace it with the same exact thing except a different color and am adding a 8’ Power-Pole and remote control trolling motor, and I could be fishing out of any boat made. The 18’ HPX Maverick is super nice but very costly ($40-50K) and doesn’t get as shallow as my rig. I fished in Ben Alderman’s last week. It is a great boat but it will cost you. A new rig like mine will cost you as well because my hull is kevlar, probably in the low 40s. The top 5 flats boat companies are Action Craft, Maverick/Hewes, Hells Bay, Egret, and Dolphin. I was looking for a flats boat earlier in the summer. (Since decided to keep the current rig). I was VERY impressed with the Beavertail. These boats look to be put together well, functional, and great looking. Any experience with the Beavertails? (boats, that is)

BT paid out a lawsuit to Hells Bay earlier this yr since they splashed or copied their hull design. They are well built boats, but just not their “own” hull design. They pole very well also

Beavertail is very wet ride, but does go shallow

Nice looking boat captian Waits, thanks for your response and information. To be honest, I am looking to buy a new boat and would like a boat alittle bigger. Can anyone with Action Craft experience tell me why the 1820 is not considered as good as the 1720 or 1890 models! I have read this several times at different sites while reseaching Action Crafts. Also, I looked at the 1802 coastline this weekend at the boat show and was not impressed at all the the craftsmanship and quality. Is there a big diffence between the coastline and flatsmaster models. I hope so. I asked while I was there and did not get much information. Thanks for all your help.

Are you kidding? Maverick!!! 1802’s are the tweener of the ACs. And JR…my rig might go as shallow as yours with a 2-stroke 90 and it would track better and be quieter.

Ben, I was not comparing the 1802 to the HPXV. I know the 1802 is the “tweener” of the AC line.(no offensive to anyone). The HPXV is my dream boat and I am seriously considering buying one. It’s a little more than I want to spend, however, in the middle cost ranger flats boats I am interested in the AC FlatsMaster or possible Sterling. The point I was making is how is the craftmanship and quality of the AC. I really want to like it, however, the finish just does not seem to be as nice as some other flat boats in it’s price range. I know you fish in Florida a lot and see a lot of Sterlings. What’s you opinion of them or Ranger’s Ghost compared to Action Craft Flatsmaster considering they are a mid ranged flats boat. Also, one last thing. I know that your have a 150 on your new HPXV, do you think a 115 will perform well for someone that does not tournement fish? Thanks
