New audio deck installation fail

Just pulled out old audio deck and speakers and installed new ones. The deck is getting power, but as soon as you hit “source” to change input, the deck shuts off. You have to remove faceplate and cut power switch to restore power. But ultimately you never get sound since you need to hit source.

Sound familiar to anyone? Any ideas?

If not, reference to someone locally that is good with electronics?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome and what brand of audio deck?.

Thanks, long time Inshore reader, first time poster.

Sony CDX-M60UI.

When I first installed it the radio would work but the aux input for an iPod would keep cutting off. I thought the unit was defective, so installed new one after about a month. Now it seems to be worse, nothing wants to play.

My old man is an electrician so I have a good feeling about that work unless there is something less obvious that we’re missing.

First guess… and it really is a guess… bad ground.

A bad ground will let the deck power up as long as it does not need much juice. Then, when you ask the deck to really do something, it asks for/requires more juice which the bad ground prevents. The decks ‘sees’ a low voltage situation and crashes (so to speak - it is a baby computer, after all).

I’d pull the deck out of the boat. Straight wire it to a known good 12v source or power and make sure the deck actually works independent of anything going on in the boat. If it does, rework the power and ground wiring in the boat and become immediate suspicious of all other similar wiring in the boat.

I think you are on to something. We traced the ground, or what is the ground for other console electronics, but maybe we need to use something else. Will try that next and report back. Appreciate the response.

Definitely check your grounds. Also make sure no “hot” wires are touching the deck or metal chassis that it sits in.
