new bait

Any one ever heard of an Alabama rig? Heard that the were catchin striper on them all over the upstate! Read about them on Google! Made by Manns. Sorta like a small umbrella rig that you cast, holds 5 jig heads!. Need more info, Thanks

I didn’t know that’s what they are called, but I recently noticed them at Sportsmans Warehouse in Columbia along with the regular size umbrella rigs…I think I would need a rod with a bit more backbone than I use to really sling them.

That looks like it would be deadly when fish are schooling. They recommend a 7’ med. heavy with high speed reel. Spooled with 80 to 100 lb. braided line.

Growing old is MANDATORY, Growing up is OPTIONAL!

Saw a guy using one today. To cumbersome, and they are eating ultra small bait right now. An inch maybe. I snagged a few as we were going through schools.

Mann’s has at least an eight week back order, and they cost around $25.00. A local guide is manufacturing a similar product here in Greenville. Port-Tronics is selling them for around $14.00, if you can catch them in stock. I haven’t heard so much about the Striper bite on them, but the bigger Largemouth are devouring them!!

I fished with this guy and his rigs will catch fish. He recommends trolling at just over 2 mph so stripers and hybrids will be the the most likely catch. They are small enough to cast but trolling is very effective.

OUCH!!!..I just got mt A$$ handed to me in Fair Play Creek by a couple of guys trolling these baits. They trolled past me and caught fish. They trolled behind me and caught fish, and the even circled me several times, and caught fish all day long. I had 2 good runs on Gizzards, nothing on Blue Backs. The birds, and bait were everywhere, from the mouth of FPC, back to the I-85 bridge. I’ll be buying some of these rigs as soon as I can get my hands on them!!!

Good luck they are hard to find! I have them ordered from 3 different places! I caught (2) stripers and (4) largemouths today on a homemade one, used the wires of (5) trout clikker corks and 2.5" sashy shads
also had a lot of hits.

I bought frames through ebay from this place and made some up. To get this price you have to order a minimum $100 buying direct.

these may be a little harder to cast and retrieve Taz. these look like normal naked umbrella rigs to me. Richard at lake world had some “mini” umbrellas a couple of years ago, nose weight was someting like 1/4oz or so. It was made for crappie but the striper were wearin it out… that would be the way to go if i get to add my 2 cents…

You’re right about the Eagle Claw frames but the Trollbaby that Kevin Warren sells is only about 10" across so it could be cast. It may be the same frame you’re talking about. Kevin uses lead core line with his. The Eagle Claw frame has a 2 oz. weight in the center. I’m planning to use them in Tampa Bay for Spanish this Spring.

Cool. I have been looking at some 7" frames when all this “new bait” talk started. But been having too much fun with the trout. Headed this weekend for some grouper if the weather holds, so it will be at least a week or two before I try for some stripes, not to mention I gotta make it to a basspro before I can go…lol…been saving gift cards for over a year for a new lowrance HDS and finally got enough…lol

Probably somewhere between the ledge and north hole. Start in about 70’. Running out of St. HELENA.

I’m in NMB until Sunday morning and looking to hook up with one or more of my buddies here. I live near Hartwell and striper fish as much as I can. If you ever want to fish Hartwell get in touch. Good luck on the grouper.

Just received two trollbabies. Gonna pull em out next trip to Lk Murray (soon). Will advise…

Here is an address to a great site for the mini U rigs as well as castable rigs as well. Great folks. www.castawaybaits.com.
Tell them you heard about them from Midlands Striper Club.
Thanks
