This is both an inshore and offshore consideration: I am thinking of going to a Bay Boat. Coming from Columbia, with the weather almost always different than the forecast, plus the joy of hauling all the way to Charleston, I have decided to either go bigger (not a great plan for staying married) or go to a bay. So my question to this semi-illustrious group, is which Bay would you recommend?
If you plan on going offshore regularly, I would go with a deep v. I can fish a good many places inshore with my 23’ cc. I like comfort and dry over anything.
Out of curiosity, what is wrong with the boat you have? Are you calling ten miles offshore, or is fifty miles offshore? If you are just running to the reefs, a bay boat will do it, plus I think you will enjoy it more inshore and on the lake. If you are talking ledge and beyond, not ideal, and you’ll find you better be hardcore to do that from Columbia many times a year. I did it for years, but age and gas prices took a toll on me.
My wife actually said I could have 2 boats, as long as the new one was a pontoon. Somebody just shoot me, please. My current boat is fine, no problems. I can make long runs on good days (you know when the weather man does not lie). Just thinking about less running and fuel and more versatility.
The boat builders seem to be building more of the larger bay boats, so someone is buying them. I can’t say I’ve tried them, but I’m not seeing them at the ledge. Maybe the length helps the ride, but when it gets rough, the more freeboard the better, IMO. The bay boats might work offshore in the Gulf, and would be okay on the best days here…but it can change so fast. On the other hand, if you fish more inshore or in close, they probably have some advantages there. Maybe you could hitch a ride in one on a less than perfect day?
