New Fish Species - A True Story

I once worked with a gentleman from Orangeburg, SC who told me he wanted to get an offshore boat so he could ?go out to the jetties.? I had a good laugh and told him that if he bought a big boat he could go beyond the jetties.

About a year later I saw him and he said he had purchased a 23 ft Hydrasport, and wanted to know if I would go out with him on his first trip. ?Of course? I said.

So we went out to about 90 ft of water to bottom fish. After an hour or so, he hooked something big and eventually landed a 30 lb amberjack. He was very excited and said ?man look at the size of that tuna.? I had another laugh and told him it was an amberjack. He said ?What?s an amberjack?? And I said ?Well it?s sort of a poor man?s tuna.?
When we got back to the landing, of course the game warden was there and asked my friend if we had caught anything. Beaming with pride, my friend said ?Yes sir, I caught a nice hammerjack.? The game warden gave him a look I will never forget and said ?What the hell is a hammerjack?? My friend of course said ?Oh, that?s a poor man?s tuna.?

Haha, love it. That gave me a good laugh, it’s always helpful to know the species you’re hooking into but there’s plenty of times that I catch something and I have no clue what it is. Take a picture, throw it back and look it up later
