I need a new fly line for my 9 wt rod. I fish mainly for reds, ladyfish, spanish and the occasional bonefish. I need some advice on a 9 wt. wf line. My current line is about 5 yrs. old, Scientific Anglers. I don’t normally cast beyond 50 ft. as I am usually sight casting.
I had all SA lines until someone talked me into a RIO. I believe there is a night and day difference between the two. Lots of different taper options, redfish/bonefish/general saltwater, etc…
A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.
Is the Rio redfish line that much better? I have and been using SA redfish line ever since I started fly fishing (mainly for reds). Alot of my fishing buddies have Rio or Orivs lines, and do their best to convince me to make the switch.
Is the Rio line a better/good upgrade? I’ve been pondering the idea of getting a Rio line. One thing I’ve seen and do like, is the pre molded loop on Rio lines.
I had some questions and a friend told me to call Rio. Right…called, talked to a human who referred me to another human (technician) who actually laid out options, talked about the advantages/disadvantages of using my current saltwater lines in Alaska and got me all squared away with the four new lines. Even told me to call him back if I had any more questions. I’m sold on the service.
“The good fisherman is surprised when he doesn’t catch fish: I am just the other way around.”
Gene Hill, Passing a Good Time.
I have fished, and do fish both SA and RIO… and over the years Ive fished Courtland, Airflo, and Jim Teeny lines.
RIO has some of the best tapers (thought the SA Redfish is pretty close to the RIO redfish)… and they cast well. But as far as durability, SA gets my vote. Coutland and Orvis are crap… Airflo are nices as are teeny…
hard to go wrong with a RIO or an SA line… Redfish taper is the way to go for short casts though, no matter which company you go with…
