New for me fish

Fished the pier at Folly and mostly watched girls walk by - The action started about 1 hour after low tide, Caught the usual critters - a few decent whiting , some bluefish . I had a mess on the spool of my spinning reel and I dropped the rig straight down next to a piling and played with the line until it was straight and I felt a hard thud when I started recovering the line. Felt like a decent weight fish - but it wasn’t going anywhere. Not moving around just struggling in 1 spot . Got it to the surface and I was shocked to see a large southern stargazer. Got him on the pier and wow! This fish had it all ! eyes on top of his head, had his own electric generator , venomous gill cover spines and a worm looking lure in his mouth. The fish shocked me enough to cramp my finger muscles while I unhooked it. It was between 2 1/2 and 3 lbs. Whipped out my phone and read that it was excellent food quality. The fillets were thick and very snow white. Broiled it till a degree of firmness. Friends , without a doubt, this was the best tasting shore fish I EVER tasted ! White , nice flake with a unique sweetness. It bit a mud minnow

I caught one once asked the guys next to me what it was and they told me a type of flying fish. I realesed it and it just barried itself in the sand. They went to pick it up so i grabbed it and threw it to deep water. These guys said they were from north carolina. In north Carolina they are commonly caught and eaten and are known as good fish. They definetly wanted it. Also if you were willing to try that you should try the Carolina Monk fish also known as dog fish. Ive heard they are very good. The tail meat is lobsterish. Grill on grill or pan with bacon.

Those things are wild looking. Had to look it up! I would have never thought it would be a good fish to eat

Had to look that up as well. Crazy what hides in the ocean.

Anything that pulls drag, right?

It was not at all like monkfish. Was more like grouper meat but much better

Pretty wild there. I would be afraid eat something that ugly. Nice work though.
