Was thinking of selling the small .380 I have in the house and buying a different kind. I keep the gun in the house for protection, but not too comfortable with the feel of it. Never did. I prefer something with a clip. Anyone give any suggestions?
S&W M&P any caliber
Pioneer 197SF
1911
Simple, safe, reliable, one of the best triggers, big boy bullet, not as snappy as 40 SW or 9mm, a blast to shoot. Not to mention a great history and doesn’t look like a gun my 6 year old has in his toy box.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I have a s&w m&p .40 and love it. 15+1 capacity and love the feel of it.
Home defense? Yep shotgun.
Umm, you gonna eat that?
Thousands have died to save my freedom. Only one has died to save my soul!
Saltydog has it right, most people can’t hit the side of a barn at ten feet with one of those pretty little handguns. Load of number 8s up to buckshot at close range with a scattergun will get their attention real fast.
Oh, by the way, it is called a scattergun for two reasons. One being, you better scatter when you hear it go off!
Got rid of my .380 also. Too small and I was wary that the weapon did not have a safety. No big deal with a revolver, but with a pocket automatic I prefer a safety.
My girl’s Home D weapon is a Taurus .357 revolver
My Home D weapon is 1911 .45
Both are outstanding.

For home security what 2 others said, shotgun. Specifically, a pump shotgun. Even the dumbest criminal recognizes the sound of a slide racking. If they hear that and stick around, they are asking for it.

Every man should own a shotgun, but if you already have one, or are looking for something to keep in the nightstand, then you can’t go wrong with a Glock. 9mm ammo is cheap if you shoot a lot. The .40 cal is a slightly bigger bullet and ammo is pretty easy to get for it.
I originally got the 380 for wife to be able to handle, which she does, but when came down to it and I asked her if she could shoot someone ,well thats why imgetting a gun I feel better with
My wife shoots a 9mm Glock all of the time and feels comfortable with it. She didn’t like the .40 as much as it stings the hand a bit.
You can always take her to a range and shoot some of the range guns, they have 9mm, .40, .357, 45, etc. She could shoot some and figure out whats most comfortable. Pump shotgun sound is great, but if you want to keep in nightstand that’s not an option. I like the S&W M&P for auto, and you can rack those slides pretty loud if you want, too. I keep a taurus .357 mag in my nightstand, good gun and free from grandad.
I would recommend going to the range and shooting a Glock G21, 5" 1911, and a 4" Ruger SP101 in .357.
Try to get yourself fatigued and see which one is more accurate with shaky hands and slightly blurry vision. I prefer the light trigger pull of the 1911, even when shaking a little and with tunnel vision I can be very accurate. Not so much with a revolver or heavier trigger pull of a striker fired gun. Remember in a home defense situation you won’t ever have ideal conditions. I will take accuracy and a great trigger over 3-5 more rounds.

For home defense? Definitely a shotgun. Not only does it help with accuracy, but you have less worry of pass-through of interior (and exterior) walls.
Like to dispel some myths being spread on here. No 8 shot will not kill or stop anyone. No 6 won’t even.
To stop an intruder from shooting you after you have shot him with a shotgun, you need buck shot. And that will shoot through 4 walls in your house.

If badguy is in your bedroom and you shoot him with a load of hi brass #6’s - if he ain’t dead will wish he was!!!
Just to make sure go to some mag duck loads and I promise it will do the job. 2-4-BB Hasn’t got to be buckshot.
With a full or mod choke across a 15’-25’ room your pattern might be size of a baseball if that big. For sure will take them off their feet won’t be good for them.

I see how I worded my sentence.
Still…less chance of a shotgun blast exiting the home.
Also less chance for killing your kids in another room as well.
I don’t give a **** about your kids, but figured you might.
Carry on.
