Hey, I am new here. I am moving from Asheville, NC to Charleston in the next month. Gotta get to the coast! Just wondering what are the hot spots for the inshore and surf fishing? Love to fish, my dad and I usually go to the outer banks to fish but now that I am in Charleston, it will be right at my door step. Any help would be appreciated. We love catching drum, flounder, blues, etc. Just wondering where I should begin. Thanks in advance!
Welcome to Chucktown…yes some good fishing however if you are not familiar with area would do no good to describe “Hot” spots…If I were you… invest in the tools we use down here…Dont know what size money hole you float in so your rods/reels could vary…inshore, medium action outfits…average 15# line…braid or Mono or both( tons of opinions on both)…Bullet/football/split shot wieghts…1/4 ounce to 1 ounce …mainly 1/2’s…Swivels…invest in a good cast net…cant recommend size here dont know if you have ever slung one…give this post a few days slowly information will come in…welcome
Welcome to the area. My wife and I both went to App, and I grew up in Asheville. Much better living down here in Charleston. Wish I could help you more but my boat has been on the water 2 times in the past 6 months. I know, it’s sad. Anyway, I spent weeks reading through posts, and trying out techniques people provided. Had lots of luck fishing docks, oyster bars, and any other type of structure. Carolina rigs and popping corks have proven the best for me. The bite seems to depend a lot on the tide, but I don’t always have the luxury of going out on a perfect tide. Definitely try out fishing flood tides, and wading in the grass. It is the best type of fishing around. Usually when the tide reaches 6.0 or higher it will flood certain flats and you just look for tails waving in the air and it’s game on. Good luck and sorry I couldn’t help more.
Don’t have a knack for makin motors crank,

I went to Appalachian. Good times. From what I can remember
appalachian treated me as well. was lucky enough to be around for 3 straight football national titles and too watch that freak of nature armanti edwards shred teams
good times
Welcome. Two good places to start.
1st if you have a boat, go to the jetties. Take two anchors and stay out of the shipping channel. Watch your depth finder and find a hole or a rock mound. Good baits to take are a couple dozen live shrimp, some finger mullet and a brick of frozen squid. Put some baits on the bottom and some under a float. Something is going to bite.
2nd if you don’t have a boat go to Sullivans Island down by the fort and fish around the rocks out there. Shrimp or finger mullet on the bottom. Be careful wading there (I would suggest NOT wading) even knee deep the under tow is usually nasty and unforgiving.
That should be enough to get you started. Be considerate and friendly and you’ll meet others that are willing to talk and share info. have fun, be safe.
If you’re not effecting the world around you in a positive manner…you’re taking up too much space.
For surf-fishing, head to folly beach, left @ light, go to then end and fish the rock groins. Any of the bait mentioned above floated just enough off the bottom to prevent hanging up every cast. I’ve caught pompano, red drum, black drum, flounder, blues, trout, whiting, sharks, skates, and other crap fish that way.
I’m surprised nobody mentioned the grillage.

Wow, so many App grads. I love it! I was at App during the 3 straight titles, and was in Ann Arbor for the upset! I appreciate all the help, and would love to meet up with some App grads. Especially when ASU rolls into town to play The Citadel this year. Again, thanks for the advice. I am definately looking forward to trying out these spots. Pretty experienced salt water fisherman, but can always learn some new tips. Thanks again!
appstate do you know Katie Blaylock that played soccer for ASU?

The name sounds very familar. Anyways looking forward to the move. Would love to meet up with some of you guys. Especially you App grads, got to make some new friends now that I will be in Chucktown. Thanks again!
Apps hit me up when you get here. I’ll show you around some of my “hot” spots. I’d like to pick your brain about the outer banks, heading there next month for a fam vacation.

bubbbie, I went fishing on the outer banks when I was about 22 (1982)with father and some of his cronies. I had a new K-5 Blazer. The important lesson that I learned the hard way is that if you are driving on the beach, drop you’re tire pressure to half. None of us had ever driven on the beach so I learned that one the hard way.
Bubbbie, I’ll definately hit you up. Where at on the Outer Banks are you going? We usually fish Ocracoke, but have fished Hatteras too. Great fishing especially early morning and in the evening. Only problem now is they close large portions of the beach for birds. Not my favorite thing in the world, but thats a different discussion.
Hey guys, heading down this weekend to look for a place to live. Want to do a little fishing while I am there. If you could pick a place to fish for a few hours one day with no boat where would it be?? Thanks in advance!
Hey app, I was raised in Asheville, if your looking for apts/housing with Asheville pricing your best bet is West Ashley …
Pitt street in Mt.Pleasant…or Mt.Pleasant pier by Ravenel Bridge…or Folly Beach pier…or beach surf fishing…keep in mind water I believe will be high about 5:30a.m…all of these places I am sure produce at certain tides…if you wait to go on piers the best spots may be taken…many more on this site know more than me…the middle of day will be hot…two hours before high tide(evening) if you walk out on Mt. Pleasant pier…fish carolina rig on the grass line on the left and out about 10 yards…drop one down 5 yards from pier…can throw cast net on the right side for hadens and mullet…I think you could go to Sullivans Island and fish rocks any time…what time can you go?
From another newbie, thanks for the info.
dang elad, giving away all the good spots haha …
