Hi Everyone, Total novice here. I have wanted to salt water fish for some time now and finally have my license and purchased a shakespere rod with 8 lb test. I really want to fish off of the piers of IOP , Folly and Mt. P. I would really appreciate any and all tips so I don’t look like a fish out of water, pardon the pun. Yes I have read read the idiots guide to fishing and I loved it.
Medickb; welcome to the site , if you want to start by fishing off the piers , you are starting off a little on the light side with your choice of tackle… Assuming you purchased a light rod / freshwater
rig you won’t be able to handle much more than small pin fish. Not enough “meat” in that set up to pier/surf fish, you’ll be at disadvantage trying to land most species especially from pier. I would advise visiting a few of the piers and talk to some of the
“old salts” I’m sure most will be more than happy to offer solid advice on beginning tackle , also Haddrells tackle I know will help and advise on what to do…Go catch em up and post results…

Welcome x2, medickb. I will say that most any rod and reel that could handle Largmouth Bass or Striped Bass will catch just about anything you may hook from the piers or surf, barring a larger Shark, big Stingray or Bull Red Drum. I would suggest going up in line strength to maybe 15-17lb test. Keep in mind also the amount of weight needed sometimes to hold bottom. 4-6oz is not uncommon, which is alot for a med. strength rod.
Thanks alot for the tips , hopefully I will have the chance to get out sometime this week.

Welcome and what they said. Heavier line! Get some frozen squid or shrimp and have at it! Never know what you may catch off the piers. Usually there are some really friendly people fishing the piers that don’t mind giving pointers.
One piece of advice, carefull pulling your fish up near pilings as barnacles will quickly cut your line!
