New guy

First post here…
I’m a recent moved down from CT to take a job in Ladson. Like most everyone here, I’m addicted to fishing. Back home I guided year round on the salt, rivers and ice in the winter. My bread and butter was striped bass. We had it good for both quantity and quality where they average fish was low to mid 20 pounds with fish in the 50’s not uncommon at all. I honestly wasn’t sure that I was making the right move by walking away from everything I knew up north, but I could not be happier here. The humidity can be a bit much at times but your women are smoking hot and the food amazing…

Since I’ve moved, I’ve spent plenty of time chasing trout and reds and have had a blast with that, but over the last several weeks, I’ve been bitten hard by the offshore bug. We’ve been focused on dialing in the grouper bite on jigs and I think it’s safe to say, we’ve got it figured out. As a transplant, I can’t get over what an amazing fishery you all have down here. Here are a few pics from some of our recent trips… Enjoy!

Welcome, my wife and I made the move from CT in 2015 and couldn’t be happier! We love it here. Those are some nice fish!

Nice work! Looks like you’ve got the fishing figured out for sure.

First: Welcome to the home of the free!
Second: It’s not “you all”, it’s y’all.
Third: Great first post and photos.

Awesome, lot of local critters here will take a jig. Gets frustrating when the cudas & kings show up.
Search Mr. Cortland’s wares, slick heat-on skin for jigs.

We load up the hook loop with aluminum sleeves to fend off the teeth. Not 100% but seems to beat down the odds.

holy S at those groupas…welcome and thanks for the report…

wait, HOLY S at those groupas!!!

Wow looks like you either have put a lot of time in finding spots offshore in your limited time here or someone has been helping you out. Which is if?

Great first post and pics Saxitalis! Welcome to SC and the site. Yes Sir, our fishery is fantastic. In some cases we may have to travel a bit further offshore, but I’d dare say we have one of the best on the East Coast.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

I’m proud to say, I did this on my own. Folks around here are pretty tight lipped on their spots. As an ex charter captain, I completely get that. At home I had countless hours into unlocking the code and I respect those that do the same.

I did my research and and spent some time and fuel looking for particular structure. Honestly, I think I got a little lucky the first time out but found what I was looking for. We applied what we learned that day to other locations and now have way points spread out all over.

Grouper and how they relates to certain bottom is very similar to striped bass where I come from, just deeper. I find it incredibly rewarding putting the pieces together and finding my own fish. I expect things to get more challenging as the water cools and they move shallow but at least we won’t burn as much fuel!

Well good on you sir. Nothing I hate more than a transplant who wants it to come easy. Or a native for that matter. Keep it up.

And dont be afraid to whip out some of those bucktails from your striper fishing once those fish end up closer in during the fall.

I had a day like that once

Man that’s a pretty quick learning curve.
You’re gonna miss the ice fishing round about February…
Welcome down.

“No… it’s okay, I know the way out…”

Saxitalis, when you get Sells to tell you “Good Work”, that’s as good as it comes on this site. Down to Earth, non snobbish, salt of the Earth kind of guy. I’ve not been let down or led astray by him. If he gives advice, it is from tried and true experience.
