Got an invite to go and squirrel hunt today with two great dogs Daisy and Duke and they were put to the test with their keen sense of smell for tree rats! Windy conditions today lead us to try them out and we were far from being let down all parties in the group seemed to be excited every time the barks were given indicating that a squirrel was in a tree where they stood at the base of. We just had a hard time finding these swamp creatures as they seemed to make it into the safety of a hollow before being spotted. 3 squirrels fell from the sky and many others were located just left unseen. Asked my daughter multiple times was she ready to go home and the same reply came: No sir! This is way too much fun! Thanks again to the owner of these two awesome dogs for allowing us to be apart of yet another spectacular memory!
Without a doubt the toughest hardest hunting youngen I have hunted with. According to gps collars my dogs logged in 26 miles. We had to have walked at least 10 mIles that little girl stayed with us the whole time. 2 grown men and a 13 year old boy dropped out early but she would not have any part of quitting. Through the hills and swamps she doesn’t quit. The high temp was 48 also. It was my pleasure and that’s what my dogs live for. We will do it again.
I wish I had a dog to tree those rats. Sometimes they just disappear on the ground.
Good on her for hanging in there.

I grew up hunting squirrels with my Dad and Papa in Alabama. Hunting with a dog was tough, walking was either uphill or downhill.
They had a trick to get a squirrel out of a hole. They would cut a sapling and trim the branches off. Then split it about an inch long on the skinny end, run it the hole and spin the sapling. The sapling gets tangled in the squirrel’s tail so you can pull him out. Didn’t always work, but I saw them pull many squirrel out of a hole. The second the squirrel comes out of the confines of the hole the tail comes loose and off he goes. What would happen next looked like a scene from a Laurel and Hardy movie. Dog is going nuts, somebody yelling shoot and somebody else yelling don’t shoot. Thankful nobody ever got shot.
a good squirrel dog is a rare gem. I’m talking about the rare curs that will actually sight hunt and not just bark up the last tree that one has entered. I’ve only had the opportunity of hunting once with a true squirrel dog. Then when the little tree rat stands still in one tree, it can be darn near impossible to find it. but know when a good dog trees, look very hard and hope it’s not a big tree, because you’ll be lucky to find it.
