New Motor on Old Boat Dilemma

So my engine is toast(01 90 yam 2 stroke), looking at a new 115 Yamaha on a 2001 sea pro 180cc. I have a 2017 newish ameratrail trailer under the boat. When does it make sense to put a new motor on an old boat, or how old? Do I just sell the toast rig and buy a whole new toy? or just work with what I have and find a new motor to put on an old boat. Just looking at options if it makes sense to keep the old rig…

Entirely depends on the quality of the hull and if it is what you want and use. When I worked at Ft. Johnson (on the water everyday), there were some hulls that we’d wear out in a year or two. Other hulls, we’d wear out motors on them, repower, and keep going. If the construction of the hull is quality construction and the hull has not been abused and you’re sure it is structurally sound, I’d repower. If you have any questions about the structural soundness (transom solid? stringers solid? other?), sell it.

Is the hull a good fit for what you want a boat to do? Do you fish? Does it fish well? Pull blow up toys with kids on top? Does it do that well? If it fits well, repower. If not, take the opportunity to get into something that fits better.

I will never sell my Henry O hull. She does exactly what I do (primarily a fishing platform that does family picnic stuff pretty well). She is really well built. Best riding 17’ hull ever built but she is thirsty. (Pretty high praise, but, it is true.) She has a 1995 Johnson 88spl on her that is getting a little sketchy. This year or next, she’ll get a new 115hp. (Rumors float that Evinrude is bringing a lighter 150. If that is true, we may have to sell a child and put some big power on her. :slight_smile: )

Used to run a little Ashe Craft. Good little boat, while it lasted. But, transom and floor coring went to mush. Wore out a 40hp on her. She lasted about as long as the motor did.

Good thoughts here. I don’t think it is the perfect boat. I probably would not want it the next 5-7 years…

Chris, The motor was running fine in august, went to crank it early sept and didn’t turn over. Thought it was the battery, battery checked out, thought it was starter, starter was good. Tried to turn it by hand and with a rope to pull start, and it didn’t move. Looks like lower cylinder is corroded and locked up. Took it to dealership by house for a “diagnosis” to confirm what I was thinking. Had a quote for 4-5k for a new powerhead. Hoping to either find a used 90-115 to sell it as a working boat, or either cut my losses and sell as is. I just got a brand new trailer a year ago…

Having owned that hull in the past it was OK but left a lot to be desired IMO. I chose to get rid of mine when my motor also suffered from corrosion issues to the point it needed to be replaced. BTW the 115 is what I had and you would like it a lot better on the that hull. My Sportsman has a WAY better (softer and very solid) ride than the Sea Pro 180CC hull.

Thanks optiker, when I joined the forum 10 years ago I noticed you used to have one as well. And to think im looking at a sportsman 207 now. I will not be underpowered this time around! I was running a 14 pitch prop most recently and it performed WAY better than the 17 I had.

I think I will give it a week or so looking for a used motor and see about listing it.

10-4. If you do go with the 207, I highly recommend the 150 and tabs if you can swing it

I’m curious on why that 3 cylinder Yamaha failed

Screamingdrag, I was told by a dealership that it was because the lower cylinder was corroded and seized. Im still confused as well, as it had run so well leading up to the time it didn’t. They thought maybe water got into the cylinder over time. I run ethanol free fuel, and a fuel water separator, and change out the onboard fuel filter yearly. I hate to give on the motor as it ran well for so long, literally three days before it stopped. I figured there would be an event or events leading up to the failure.

Easy to rebuild and a I wouldn’t go the new powerhead route unless the powerhead was cracked. Did one cylinder on a SWS 200 for 1500$, 10 years ago and shes still running to my knowledge.

Diesel fuel is the best thing to free up piston rings and cylinder.Also check for a water leak on the cooling side near that cylinder.After you get it freed up,just crank it up without a spark plug in that cylinder and see if you got any water coming out.

So I did put 2 stroke oil in the spark plug holes, and it has been sitting in the upright position as I heard that could loosen it up. Could it just be a little rust on the piston rings and it just needs to be loosened a bit? the Dealer did try to turn with a breaker bar, but said it resisted a little. If it did ever break free, and still had compression, wouldn’t I be good?

Not quite how that works

depends on your moral compass i reckon

a head gasket failure could easily cause your issue.
the struggle you are gong to have with a rebuild is that it sat for a long time with water in the cylinders, and you most likely now have damage to crank shaft, making it cost prohibitive to rebuild.
A brand new Yamaha powerhead is $3000 for the part.
