new place to fish

Im looking at a map trying to find a new place to fish when i go on vac :smiley:We are going to garden city:slightly_smiling_face: and i am taking my kayak  I was thinking murrells inlet or waccamaw waterway by georgetown
thanks for any info

still, if you want fresh water then the waccamaw where you want to go. If its saltwater, hit Murrells(alot of traffic)or Pawelys. Unless things have changed in the last couple of years, there should be at least three landings on the Island(one on the south end and two on the north end). If you like Flounder use the north landings. troll some mud’s and watch out. Lived there for many years, wish the flounder fishier was as good down here.

when are you going to be there? Looks like Max(Hitler) and myself will be there during the first week of May to see my dad.

Hey stillfishn - Welcome to the Redneck Riviera!

There’s major dredging going on behind Pawleys Island at both ends. Some fish are being caught at the north inlet of Pawleys, but I’m not sure what the condition is of the water in the creeks. The last time I was there, the dredges had it messed up pretty bad.

I recommend Murrells Inlet. The fish have been a little slow to turn on, but it’s picking up. There are a couple kayak-friendly put-ins. There’s a small dirt ramp at Morris Park beside Hot Fish Club in Murrells Inlet. I like it but you can run out of water at the landing at low tide, so you need to time your trip. The best place for kayaks is Oyster Landing. Look for the dirt road off Hwy 17, just above Huntington State Park. There’s a sign that says “Oyster Shell Recycling”. The dirt road will take you to a small beach on the inlet.

I don’t fish the river much. If you want to check it out, there’s a landing at Wacca Wache Marina in Murrells Inlet and a public landing at Hagley in Pawleys Island.

Enjoy your vacation,

Oyster, I remember many years ago they were talking about dredging the south creek and spraying the slug back over the marsh…please tell me thats not what they are doing.

MUDROC we are going down may 3-8 maybe we can meet up and fish

Hey Mud -

Fortunately not. They’ve built some temporary holding ponds on the south end. After the sand is nearly dry, they’re spreading it on the beach. Beach erosion has been a major problem on that end, and right now, each grain of sand is worth its weight in gold. Not sure where the pluff is going. I guess it’s a new variety of “dark sand”. They spent the winter frantically counting and recounting public parking spots, making sure they qualified for federal grants. Dredging was due to be complete around January, I think. It’s still going on, and the rental owners are gettin’ frantic. Apparently, the dredges ran into a good bit of stuff left over from Hugo, which caused them all kind of problems.

You’ve been gone for awhile? The creek had filled in pretty bad on both ends. I’m hopin’ it will be good for the fishing after everything is wrapped up. Flounder gigging has become a hot-button topic around the island. Seems like the local politicians are wantin’ to get involved. Should be an interesting summer. :sunglasses:

still, I not sure of the dates that I will be there yet, but as we get closer to May I’ll let you know.

Oyster, moved from Garden City to Charleston about 12 years ago. When I left they were having problems with high tide being under some of houses at the south end and where the island split during Hugo. Didn’t do a lot of fishing in the inlet though it was in my back yard. Would it be better to stay near the park or head towards Garden City?

Mud - I fish the lower end, around Oaks or Allston Creeks, just 'cause this area is more convenient to where I put in. It’s a paddle to the upper end, usually thru a helluva lot of boat traffic. I’d love to fish the upper end, but haven’t found a good place to drop in the kayak up there. Regardless of where you go in MI, it’s hard to get lonely, if you know what I mean… If you want to get together and check it out one day, gimme a holler on here before you head up this way.

Oyster, let me guess…once you turn off buss 17 heading towards the pier…just after the bridge you can’t pull off and park along the creek anymore? Plus do you ever fish on the south side of the north jettie? Used to hit it a lot on the rising tide from the bank.

once I know exactly when I’ll be up there I’ll let y’all know!

Hey Mud - We've had company for 'bout 10 days that's really cut into my kayak time. It's killing me! I haven't been to Pawleys Creek in awhile. I understand they finished dredging on the south end, but I think still working on the north end. The dredge undercut one of the ramps, leaving about a 4' dropoff, so they're still working on that. I think it's the one on the south end at birdsnest. There are some PI regulars who post in the Georgetown/Grand Strand forum. I haven't seen any reports, but you might be able to pull some info out of them. I'm guessing it will take awhile for the creek to recover, but who knows? I'm committed on 5/10-11, but if you can get out 5/7-9, gimme a holler and we'll meet up somewhere. ~OC~ :sunglasses:
