Just bought a Penn Battle 5000. Your thoughts??

Battles are great reels IMO. I’ve got a couple 2000’s for Trout and Reds and am very pleased. What you going after with a 5?!

I have a 4000 and really like it. Would like to get a 3000 as well.

I’ve got 2 Battle 4000’s. Best spinning reel ever, in my opinion.

A 5 isn’t much bigger…I can be more versitile with a 5k rather than a 4k I think. I would want to catch reds, spanish, sheeps, spades etc…I mean it’s not the only reel I have…but it’s the most expensive…Maybe I should go back and get a 4k??? I had a Penn Captiva that just broke that I really liked but apparently they don’t make those anymore. I’ve been told that the Fierce took it’s place. Not sure…but I really like the way the Battle looks and feels. Haven’t put it on my rod yet but I’m sure it will feel good. I got a while to try it out, so if it seems too big (that’s what she said) I can take it back and get a smaller one.

I would say a 4k is all you need…

I have an assortment of Penn reels. I have 2 battle 4k’s and they are very good reels for the money. The drag is very smooth and surprisingly strong for the size. They also have a rubber insert to keep braid from slipping.

I also have some spinfisher 650 SS’s and like them for bigger stuff. Very solid.

Next ones I get will be one of those Torque reels. They look real nice. The Spammers are very tough and are liked by a lot of charter fishing guys. I like most of their stuff but they also build lines of crap reels.

What is the best size for inshore? In the market fora new reel.

i HAVE 4 OF THE 3000S FOR INSHORE WITH 20# BRAID
THEY ARE AWESOME
I ALSO HAVE 2 6000S WITH 50# BRAID FOR TARPON THEY ARE ALSO VERY NICE
I THINK IM GONNA MIX A 3000 IN FOR TARPON NEXT TRIP MIGHT HAVE TO FOLLOW BUT THATS HOW BADA$$ THE DRAGS ARE

I’ve got a 5000 on a Shimano Trevala 6’6" MH 50-100 and is loaded with 30 lb braid. I have this rod on my boat every day and this combo has caught big fat barracudas, 20 lb dolphin, grouper up to 20 lbs (blacks, gags, baby goliaths), big yellowtail, mangrove and mutton snappers, plenty of sharks up to 8 ft, big tarpon, etc. It’s one of my go to rods for just about any type of reef fishing. The 5000 will be great for fishing the Charleston reefs for sheeps, bsb and spaids, and inshore for the big black drum, large stingrays and bonnetheads, and bull spottails.

I’ve thoroughly abused my 5000 and it still works like a dream. My only comment is that my bail arm is a bit wobbly.

The older battles (at least the smaller sizes) had paint chipping issues but my 5000 has not encountered such an issue.

I picked up a 1000 this past Friday to go along with a 3000 and a 4000 I already owned. Great reels for not a ton of money.

Any good spinning reel between 2000 and 3ooo will handle most anything inshore if you use braided line.

I’m with everyone on here…I use 5000 for bottom fishing offshore. All you need is the 3000 and it should be sufficient inshore.
