New Reels - TLD 15, 20, or 25's????

I’m about to have to buy a couple of new reels and was wondering if I needed TLD 15’s, 20’s, or 25’s? What is the main difference? I have 2 25’s now that work great. I need to add a couple of more for when we are offshore but if the 15 or 20 will do just as well, I don’t see the need to throw down the extra cash?? We are fishing off of a 21’ Key West show it isn’t like we will be out there 200 miles for weeks at a time or anything. Thanks in advance for the advice.

25s, but personally prefer the 30s.

15’s are better for kingfishing…20’s a waste of space.

Since you didn’t say how far you normally go, or the species you target; I’ll give you a very general answer. 15’s within 20 miles, 25’s beyond, skip the 20’s. I think rods are more important than reels, you can use large spinners for just about any fish, including sails, if you have the right rod for the job, and the time and patience to fight the fish, rather than “winch” him in with a 25. Personally, I have 15’s for within 30 miles trolling, but I am going to large spinners for more fight, ability to cast to fish, and no more “horsing” in kings, dolphin, etc. I know some aj’s, 'cudas, and largw sharks are going to take me and my boat for a ride sometimes, but what a ride! Extraspools of line on board, rigging material, and the 15’s for backup should make for an exciting day…

What is the problem with the 20’s? Normally within 20miles, but will be going further out coming up.

Get the 25’s. You can load them up with whatever pound test floats your boat and 99% of the time you’ll have planty of line. These reel will last a long time and you can always use the 25’s. Most folks progress from nearshore/king mackeral, to offshore/dolphin etc, to offshore targeted(often as their desire/budget/boats grow). Throughout this progression the 25’s will always have a place in the spread(even on the big boys) and you can use them on nearly everything you would use a 15 on- but not vice versa. If they don’t fit your needs there is also a higher demand for them in the market place.

George Carlin said it best, ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that’’.

15s - are great for kings and 3ft sharks, even a little bottom bumping.

20s - I don’t recommend them. Gear ratio is slower than the 15s. If you try and bottom bump or use it on your way back, you’ll get tired of the reel quick.

25s - good for a little bit of everything, and have enough line on it for that big hook up.

You’re right, fighting a big fish on a 20 feels like yourre working a pepper mill. The 2 biggest wahoo caught on my boat were a 70 on a spinning rod and a 65 on a 25. The 30 is better than the 25 if you can spare the coins in my opinion: higher ratio high gear + low gear which can be handy, better handle. Both have the same spool size, 20-30# line.

The 20 is the same exact reel as the 25, the 25 just has a wider spool so it holds more line. you can get 450 yards of 40# mono on a 25, which works out well.

Tyrnos 30.

If you are regularly trolling at the ledge and beyond I would get 25’s. Otherwise a 15 or 20 will do the job.

So a 15 would do fine on Tarpon?
